Cinderella (1950)
Makes you a child again
I don't think I need to tell you the story. For it has been told for years and years. So I will just share my feelings. I first saw Cinderella was when I was five years old. From then on I was a Disney child in a good way. The animation now seems childish and old fashioned, but that is part of its charm now. Now, in the age of High School Musical and computer generated images, it seems like people have forgotten the genius and magical essence of early Disney movies. Thankfully I was born before that so I was introduced to this classic. And it seems no matter how old I get, I turn back into that five year old watching it on VHS. Which is the true magic of Disney.
La Môme (2007)
A wonderful movie, But research before you watch
IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE, MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS I am 21 and I went to see this movie as a fan of singers from decades past. I did not know much if at all anything about Edith Piaf. I had heard "La Vie En Rose" many times in movies and television, but other than that and the fact she had been likened to the American singer actress Judy Garland, I was not familiar with Edith's music or life.
That all changed this past summer when I went by myself to the movie. I do not remember a time at the theatre in recent years where I felt such joy, such pain, such sadness, such inspiration, and all within the length of the film. For most of the film, I thought I was watching Edith herself. Like it was not an actress playing a part, but instead someone emersed so much in the part that you forget she was playing someone who has passed on.
To tell the truth, I didn't have any respect for even Gerard Depardu (forgive me if I am misspelling his name) until I saw his small but pivotal part in this film. I think that should show you how wonderful the movie is.
I am an American who is not fluent in french, so I had to study the subtitles. I figured that would be a turn off, but it only helped understand the movie and her life. Soon after seeing the movie, I went out and bought CDs containing "little sparrow"'s music and still continue to listen to it.
***POSSIBLE SPOILER*** My only issue with the movie was towards the end, it jumped around a little too much. She went from old woman, to young woman, and back. I was glad I read a bit about her before, otherwise I would have been more confused than I was.
My Girl (1991)
So many years later, still a favorite
Don't READ IF YOU Haven't SEEN THE WHOLE THING I first saw this movie when it first came out on video. I was six years old I think and this was a favorite of my sister. So we watched this over and over. Never getting sick of it. Recently, my sister and I were talking and I told her how I was flipping through the channels and saw it was on. She told me she was watching it too. Watching it like she was a child again. We both actually looked away when Veda goes to Thomas' casket so we don't get wrecked with emotion again.
After all these years, the acting is still awesome, especially Anna Clumpsky and the almost always wonderful Jamie Lee Curtis. The stories are still reminisent of childhood and all the trials and tribulations that come with it. That the emotions a person felt then is still there.
From the first moments to the end. This movie is sweet and sensitive. But in the true way, not sacarine sweet sickening way. And if there was one critique I was to give the movie was that they made a sequel that made the original seem not as good as it is
WTC View (2005)
More to Mike than Mode
I was a freshman in high school, sitting in the front row in Spanish class on 9/11. Even though it has been five plus years since that day, the emotions I went through in 2001 are still there. As they were watching this movie. One day I was channel surfing and stopped at LOGO and saw it was a movie starring Mr. Urie from my favorite new show UGLY BETTY. All I knew about Urie was the flamboyant Marc who couldn't be more "fluffy" as was stated in a recent episode. So I was really surprised at his performance as a gay man a few blocks away from ground zero. During the movie, Marc from UGLY BETTY disappeared and Urie the actor shown through like a star in darkness. When I watched his performance I found myself recalling that day and the days that followed.
If you haven't seen this movie, rent it. Watch it. Yes it is sad and it evokes emotion we all felt that month in 2001. But also like that year, the movie leaves with a message of hope even in the face of terror and pain. The subsequent times I viewed the movie I wasn't the person I am now, I went back to September 2001 and I do cry remembering the fear I had not knowing what would happen. I remember feeling what Urie's character was feeling, though I was 6 hours away. But my heart is still lit up inside by the end remembering the hope that was there.
If you are a fan of UGLY BETTY, you will see Marc in a whole new light. For me, watching this movie, I gained a whole new respect for Urie as an actor than I had watching him in UGLY BETTY.
