Jubilee (2023)
An ultimate mess with a clichéd and predictable ending
Despite being one of the most anticipated series of 2023, Jubilee barely managed to intrigue me. All the main characters are either confused, upset, or aroused.
Just too many things wrong with character development viz. Conflict within the personality traits of a few characters. For instance:
1. Jay Khanna, a smart and talented artist, falls for Nilofer Qureshi, who by nature is a coquette, despite receiving a proposal from a smart girl Kiran, who likes him too.
2. Maqsood, who appears to be close to Jamshed Khan, makes his first attempt at extorting Binod, who was partly responsible for Jamshed's death, instead of getting him justice.
3. Sumitra Kumari, Srikant Roy's wife, is unhappy at Roy Talkies and was about to elope with Jamshed, which unfortunately couldn't happen. So what does he do next? She enters into an ego battle with Roy and becomes hell-bent on ruining Roy Talkies and Binod (alias Madan Kumar).
In total, there were 12 clichéd songs in the film. Except the first song (i.e. Udankhatole), all the others were totally unnecessary. Filmmakers should now realise that this is not pre-2010 when songs were used just to save a movie from a serious flop. The first one at least built a context for playback singing and recording within the plot, but none of the others had a significant contribution to the plot. In fact, some songs were forcibly fed into the plot, just to make them look relevant.
The story is decent, however, but the plot seemed too stretched (the songs only making it worse). Could have been done in maximum 8 episodes, with a more gradual and unpredictable ending. Nonetheless, I was happy to see Ram Kapoor back on the screen with regional talent Prosenjit. 4 stars just for the performance of Ram Kapoor, Prosenjit, Siddhant Gupta and Aparshakti.
P. S.: Why was Aditi Rao Hydari even casted? She can't act for god's sake!
Bholaa (2023)
Worth a watch; don't go by the negative reviews here.
The amount of ignorance in the reviews here is appalling. This movie has been executed quite well, despite being a remake of Kaithi.
I literally came across reviews saying stuff like:
1. "The film could afford only Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Mishra to change clothes throughout the movie": yeah because the plot is based on an overnight timeline. How many times do you change clothes in a night?
2. "The film defies all laws of physics": where were you when the same laws of physics were violated in Kaithi, dear Einstein?
3. "Camera angles are like an old-school action movie": yes, because it's an action movie and it is supposed to be like that, genius!
Ignorance is bliss, after all. Hence people have no idea about what they're saying. The only negative I found about this movie is Gajraj Rao overdoing the South Indian accent. Apart from that, everything felt in place. And Ravi Basrur's score is just cherry on the top!
My opinion: definitely worth one watch, at least.
Varisu (2023)
Way too predictable...
1. JP (the antagonist) wants to ruin Rajendran's family for the sake of a deal.
2. Vijay, Rajendran's youngest son, is separated from the family since he decided to part ways a few years back.
3. Rajendran's first and second sons compete for their father's throne. But when their father becomes aware of their scandals, he decides to make Vijay the heir, despite their misunderstandings.
4. JP tries to take advantage of the family feud. Vijay can't see all this happening, and decides to protect his family.
Yup, that's the story: it can be explained in just 4 pointers. These 4 pointers have been stretched for 3 hours! It's the same old template that has been used for ages. And the references to Vijay's previous movies were much overdone, especially the Master one.
Hostel Daze (2019)
The most consistent series from TVF.
TVF is known for delivering some very consistent series. But in the case of Hostel Daze, the only consistent thing is the decline the quality. Season 1 was good, season 2 was average. But season 3 is below par. The new "Ankit" is nowhere close to the older one. Jhantu is the same sore loser (Nikhil has acted well, nonetheless). Jat is a wannabe Steve Jobs now.
There was nothing inspiring about this series anyway: stereotyping life in engineering colleges, normalising ragging and bullying and so on. But hey, at least there was some entertainment. Even that is gone now. The series feels very dull, sore, and boring now.
Panchayat (2020)
Season 1 was brilliant, Season 2 has exceeded our expectations!
Everything about the series is great - the plot, the screenplay, and the actors. It doesn't make you feel like you're watching the same generic drama stuff. Quite entertaining and enthralling at the same time (especially S2E8).
Mind the Malhotras (2019)
A really good comedy series!
Although there isn't a story as such, it is quite entertaining. All those who found the jokes "forced" are used to modern standup comics who talk about nothing other than religion, politics and sex. Definitely worth a watch if you want to take a break from serious stuff and watch something light-hearted.
Jai Bhim (2021)
Don't watch if you're looking for a message.
This movie tries to propagate a message, but an irrelevant one. The story is based in the 90s when caste-based atrocities were more prevalent. There's rather subtle communist propaganda blended in the story.
Apart from that, everyone acted quite well in the movie.
Shaurya: It Takes Courage to Make Right... Right (2008)
Kay Kay's acting gets a pass. Rest all is beyond description.
Kay Kay's character aka Brig. Pratap Singh tells the ground reality of Kashmir in court. And as soon as he finishes speaking, he's fired from his job and a court martial is ordered against him. Like seriously? How stupid do the filmmakers have to be to think that's how a court martial works? And Akash (Javed's character) immediately starts reading out charges against Brig. Pratap without even having the case file/details. I mean, wow.
And on top of that we have Rahul and Minisha's super-uninspiring characters Sid and Kavya, and even worse acting. Sid doesn't take his job seriously until a sensational article about the case points fingers at him. And guess what? Kavya, the journo who writes the article happens to be his cousin! Sid is the one who agrees to meet her over a coffee and give clues about the case to her. I mean come on... A person so irresponsible about his job is never inducted into the army, even if it's a job in the canteen.
A well-thought propaganda movie of maligning the army's image and victimizing Kashmir's militant sympathizers. Literally zero research has gone into the script and has been made into a family entertainer instead.
Trust me, it's only Mr. Menon who has made it worth a watch.
Bhindi Baazaar (2011)
Fairly disappointing
Watched it for KK Menon, just to realise that he has a very small role. Overall, the way of telling the story is nice. The plot has some twists and unexpected moments too. But doesn't have that "dekh kar maza aa gaya" feeling.
Ankur Arora Murder Case (2013)
Decent plot ruined by below-average acting
This movie shouldn't be called a thriller at the first place - it's pure drama. The plot is good and unique, but a fair chunk of it was quite predictable. Except KK Menon everyone has acted very lethargically and unenthusiastically throughout the movie.
The Stoneman Murders (2009)
Really good
Everything about the movie is good except for the songs that are absolutely unnecessary. KK Menon as usual has done a brilliant job. Arbaaz doesn't have a very significant role so he's kind of bearable.
Vodka Diaries (2018)
A very new and unique concept.
Apparently it has not been received well as the Indian audience is not used to concepts like this. A great movie overall, which could have been even better if there was less overacting from Mandira.
