Quintessential Tarantino

If you like "Pulp Fiction," you'll like Kill Bill. Be prepared for nonstop entertainment. I don't know whether to call it a comedy, action, parody, or all three. Stylish, full of laughs, gratuitous violence & surprises around every corner. Can't wait for Vol. 2!

Deeper Meaning Beneath the Cliches
13 September 2003
I took the propaganda with a grain of salt. And the blood & guts. Even the families on the home front. To me, the movie was all about the relationships between the men, & loyalty to their leader (& vice versa). The men fought & died for each other. In that way, it reminded me of "K-19: The Widowmaker," & "Glory."

Intense
5 August 2003
This film reminded me more of "Glory" than of "Hunt for Red October" or "Das Boot." The men sacrificed themselves not for The State or some ideology, but for each other, their fellow men & their leader. You know, most of us can't change the world. In a million years, whatever we do won't make a bit of difference anyway. It's the small things--one person, one moment, one action--that really count. That's what this story said to me. Besides it's more exciting than all the shooting, car crashing, exploding movies out there.

How Ironic!
7 June 2003
I think it's amusing that some of the viewers' comments are a perfect illustration of the movie characters' hangups. You miss the whole "moral" (yes, pun intended) of the story: tolerance for other cultures. Of course, it's not for children! You have to be an adult to appreciate it. The acting, characters, scenery, & story were all top notch, & the length didn't bother me at all--I wouldn't cut a thing. Worth buying to view again with friends.

Tortilla Soup (2001)
Pleasant, but pale remake
31 August 2002
"Tortilla Soup" is certainly worth watching, even if you have already seen "Eat Drink Man Woman," but I would have enjoyed it much more if I hadn't seen the original version. I kept making comparisons throughout the whole movie. Ang Lee's characters just seemed more genuine, the food more mouthwatering, & the story more believable. I wonder if I'd feel the same if I had seen "Tortilla Soup" first...
