Slow Loop (2022)
Great "Laid-Back Camp" Style Anime!
Great anime! More about friendship than fishing, but fishing is ever present. This is probably actually the closest anime I've ever seen to Laid-Back Camp (which is my favorite, and very nearly perfect).
I don't even really like fishing, and I still don't have an urge to after watching this show, but I do find it more interesting than I did before (and I'm really hungry for fish now too). I loved the information about different kinds of fishing too! I love camping, biking, hiking, and other outdoorsy things - so it's kind of in my wheelhouse anyway.
The different character dynamics are really interesting! Hiyori and Koharu almost have a similar dynamic to Nadeshiko and Rin (although I think Rin is much more introverted than Hiyori). I think it was great they ended up being sisters, and that their friend group grew together from there. It felt really cozy, and the messages throughout of family, friendship, being yourself, handling new challenges, and even lightly touching on grief, were handled gracefully.
I feel like I can really identify with the characters, and feel like I'm really going on adventures with them.
There isn't really much, if any, fan service (which I more than appreciate, since I absolutely hate it).
The cooking looked really yummy, and made me hungry. I actually wrote down how to cook the rainbow trout from the episode where the girls camped on their own (I hope it turns out ok).
Give this a try if you like hobby anime, or relaxing, slice of life anime.
Spirited (2022)
Fun and interesting twist on a classic tale.
A Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas story. There are many adaptations of it, but I always enjoy seeing a new version of it.
I agree with other reviewers that the beginning didn't really hook me. The first musical number was also pretty bad, in my opinion, and I was wondering if I should stop watching.
But I'm glad I didn't! After a short while it started getting better. The characters seem nuanced and interesting, and the songs started getting better too. I especially liked "Good Afternoon" - it's hilarious, especially after rereading the "good afternoon" portion in the beginning of the novel (because the movie inspired me to reread the novel). I just started giggling to myself because that's totally what Scrooge is saying. It kind of reminds me of the beginning of The Hobbit too, with the many uses of Bilbo's "good morning". I'm a bit of a fan of literary devices.
I didn't really see the twist coming, but it makes a lot of sense and brings depth to the movie. I don't believe I've ever seen A Christmas Carol take that has quite the same spin, and I was very intrigued by it.
Overall I really liked the movie, and I'm sure I'll watch it again!
Cheers!
Romantic Killer (2022)
Unexpectedly Amazing
I don't generally like anime that is focused on romance. I mostly like comedy anime, slice of life, and iyashikei.
I am not even sure why I decided to give this a try, but it really had me hooked from the first episode. The characters are much more deep and nuanced than they seemed at first, and how they interact together is always interesting.
Spoilers follow:
I love Anzu's character. She is strong, independent, and she knows what she wants in life (mainly her three most important things). She does not want a relationship, and no matter how heart-touching the situation with all of these "ikemen" that surround her - she sticks to her convictions. AND has fun, interesting, deep, and meaningful relationships with all of them without it being romantic at all.
I saw another review that complained about Anzu not getting together with anybody in the end. Personally, that was the saving grace of this show for me. Maybe it's just that I'm so not into romance that it makes me roll my eyes when the main character of a show kisses their love interest at the end, but this show was incredibly refreshing.
The "romantic" setups kept coming, and that made me almost feel like rolling my eyes again and giving up on the show, but Anzu shows us time and again that you can care deeply about somebody and have close, intimate interactions with them without being romantic.
I absolutely love this show! Anzu is strong, kind, and knows how to stand up for herself and others.
This show was nicely animated, and it's great for us jaded souls who don't want the typical shallow "romance" animes (but who also enjoy heartfelt moments).
