Shutter (2008)
Snooze fest
This movie would be perfect if you want to watch something that will make you drift off to sleep. Typical low budget, film school production. Strange camera angles, bad dialogue and stereotypical Japanese characters. The lighting throughout the movie is too dark, and zero originality in the plot. The movie is so slow, it drags on and on. I wanted to scream "just get on with it". The characters are plastic, no dimension to them at all, they also all speak in a low drawn out tone that is maddening. This was put together by very immature writers who include the typical sex scene, cheesy dialogue and God awful ambient music. The last comment is the movie is really dark all the way through, even during the day. Everyone walks around in rooms without turning on lights for some reason.
Caged (2021)
Amateurish
This is a very low budget film, and it is apparent from the first scene. The acting is atrocious, the dialogue is grating, the camera work look like it was the product of an IPhone 2, and the plot leaves much to be desired. The film is a poor attempt to demonize White people, casting them as brutalizes or uneducated people in positions of power. It is one of the many attempts to promote Black actors and Black films, but doesn't want to allot the necessary funds needed. What the producers and directors need to understand is nobody cares about the skin color of the cast, as long as the movie is good. It is defeating the purpose to flood streaming venues with poor quality films in a sad attempt to diversify the film world.
The Atoning (2017)
Like watching a 6th grade orchestra
It just dragged on and on and on. You know it's going to be really bad, but you sit through it anyway hoping to go deaf. This movie had loads of potential, but needed more talent and direction. It is obvious that this was written by someone very young, who needs to obtain more experience with creating better dialogue. The people in black paint doing the modern dance performances was just sad as was the lady conducting the séance. Better than some of the horror movies out there, but needed something more to be considered "good". I wish it would have given some background on the other family living in the house.
Death in Paradise: Death of a Pawn (2022)
Losing a bit of the magic
Starting to lose the magic this show once had. I don't like the new cast. The cases are not as interesting as when the show started and I don't like the drama they have begun writing in the scripts. I really miss Dwayne, he made the show. The original DI had quirks, but he wasn't whiny and unlikable. The assistant DIs are all the same, French, black, thin females. Can't tell the difference anymore. Marlin is okay, but the chunky short haired lady is not a good fit. I hope this season they make some changes for the better. I'm not as excited as I used to be for a new season. It would also be nice to see some more creativity in the murders. I love the episodes that have the plot intertwined with the customs and traditions of the islands. The last few years have just been blah, I want a new DI. The current one makes my skin crawl a bit.
The Blacklist (2013)
Drags on
So boring. The lighting and monotone voices of the actors will but a meth-fueled insomniac to sleep. Acting is either very flat or over the top dramatic.
The 4th Floor (1999)
Overacting but great plot
This movie is one of the more enjoyable "someone is in the apartment" movies. It kept me interested throughout and was difficult to figure out what was going on. There could have been more character development, and the acting while not amateurish, is not great. There are several plot holes, that should have been explained. Where and who was the landlord? Why didn't Jane call the landlord to complain about the maggots when she first noticed them? Why didn't anyone take the bags in front of Alice's door to the garbage for her? Why would an entire apartment building go along with her boyfriend's plan? Overall, I enjoyed it, but this could have been an excellent movie if more time/energy/money had been put into it.
