Battlefield Earth (2000)
Not as bad as people describe
....but not particularly good either. Hard to believe that 2 of Hollywood's greats: John Travolta and Forrest Whittaker are in this film! But by the same token, they're the only redeeming features of this film. It was a poorly written and directed film, the plot was all over the place and characters unlikeable. Definitely only watch if you are wanting to laugh in disbelief.
Troy (2004)
It was okay...
Ironically not a single Greek in the film probably, but it was okay. There was a bit of cheesy acting despite its stellar cast. Perhaps it was more of a product of the writing, I dunno. Either way, not a bad film but not a great one either.
Gladiator (2000)
Beautiful
This is yet another great historical fictional drama that will go down in the ages as one of the best. The musical score stays with me to this day. Hans Zimmer is a musical genius!
Fight Club (1999)
A film that needs no introduction
This timeless film will go down in history as one of the greats. So well acted, so suspenseful, so darkly funny. I have seen it at least 4 times! Please give it a go if you haven't already by now.
Independence Day (1996)
Watchable flick
ID is an action/thriller classic and no doubt will be unforgettable. The acting is a bit cheesy and there are a lot of cliched moments, but overall I rate it.
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun (1999)
Supreme
The live action sequences in this game were delightful and always exciting in between stages. Hard to believe they got the likes of JEJ onto this. There was the occasional questionable acting but overall it was a great piece.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Supreme
This is easily my favourite movie. It's full of action, drama, comedy and romance all wrapped into one supremely told story. I've seen it at least 10 times!
Underbelly (2008)
Solid true crime story telling
This is a wonderful Aussie series that chronicles various true crimes in Australia. The first season is probably the best. Razor was decent. The others were a bit iffy - acting was various thereafter. Never the less, the story telling is solid and I would give each season a go!
The Irishman (2019)
I have no idea what the fuss was about
I feel like Scorsese just needed an excuse to get the old gang together in a terribly long, violent and cliched film. It has its moments, but the Irishman is ultimately a forgettable film that you won't return to watch again.
Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist (2018)
Documentaries at their finest
This story, chronicling a bizarre death (and one i vividly remember when it happened), is told in such a compelling way. The direction and musical score are noteworthy. Definitely worth the watch.
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Good film
I liked overall but Its pacing was slow and I didn't like that the narrative was split up into different acts. Otherwise, with Gosling and Cooper at the helm, the acting can't be faulted. It'll definitely touch you emotionally and the soundtrack was great.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
poor execution
It's a unique concept that could have made the audience care a little bit more about the plight of the protagonists. Instead, there is nothing at all compelling about this story or the performances. Save yourself the time.
Shame (2011)
Good film
It's an interesting film that deals with sex addiction. It starts of with some humorous moments but delves very quickly into some disturbing territories. It's not a feel good movie at all. Perhaps this film does too good a job of affecting its audience.
Captain Phillips (2013)
Decent but skims the surface
This is a decent film. It's suspenseful and high energy all the way through. The issue I had with it was the limited depiction of the Somalis in a way that gets to the root of their only plight. Why are they in this situation? Where have they come from? There could have been a more detailed exploration of this too, for us to be more invested and challenged.
Emperor: Battle for Dune (2001)
Supreme
Loved this - as a Dune fan myself. I only wish the RTS universe continue Dune further like the company did with Command and Conquer. The cinematic sequences play out like a film/miniseries!
Dune 2000 (1998)
Decent storyline and expansion of the dune universe
Look. It's not the books. And there is a bit of monotony in some of the cutscenes for the factions. Despite this, i did like the Ordos storyline, again not being true to the books. I'd happily watch this again.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (2007)
Thrilling
For a video game to be carried so well with a cinematic experience, it was really impressive. The set design, acting and writing were top notch in this video game. I've periodically just watched the cutscenes alone online, highly recommend.
Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
Decent film with an unnerving plot
It's a great film with an unnerving plot about students having to kill each other, with only one survivor being possible. Think Hunger Games on speed! I personally found it difficult to watch all the way through and watched in in stages. You've been warned.
Sully (2016)
A 10 minute incident extended into a feature film
Naturally Hanks and Ekhart were bound to carry this great film, but what amazed me was the background to to this incident and how the pilots copped it so bad despite their heroism. Kudos to the director, capturing the injustice so aptly.
Seuwiteuhom (2020)
Great
I really enjoyed Sweet Home. It's an urban disaster series which you'll think is initially going to be zombie-esque, but the producers take zombie apocalypses to a new level with a monster brand. It's frightening, funny and there's never a dull moment.
The Simpsons (1989)
Iconic but flawed
Once they entered a more modern era, the content of Simpsons changed. I feel like it was so funny up till season 13. It's still a great show, don't get me wrong. And it is ultimately part of world history, but it's not a consistent journey as the seasons progress and may not be in everyone's tastes.
Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2019)
Surprised
I'm surprised more people haven't watched/reviewed this series given it chronicles one of the industry greats of rap. Such a well put together series and not your average musical (and not a musical at all really!)
Seinfeld: The Puerto Rican Day (1998)
Fun ending to the series
It's a fun episode as it moves to the end of the series. I love how that brought back Bob and his partner. I've rewatched this episode about 20 times. Not sure what all the hate is about!
Russian Doll (2019)
Fun series
It's an easy to watch, fun series. It's not overwhelmingly funny, nor is it hooking in the way conventional dramas are, but it's easy to watch without having to think the whole way along. The costume, makeup and set design are awesome.
Kath & Kim (2008)
Ugh...
Not sure why Americans needed to remake an Aussie classic. It's an Aussie series with very Aussie humour. The nuance of the jokes don't translate into American humour. This show tries to replicate what it simply cannot. It should not have been made.
