Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Dreams Deferred (2012)
Just watch Monster
Patricia Arquette plays a prostitute, but not one of those bad ones who deserve to be abused or imprisoned, she goes to church you see. One of her client's goes on a shooting spree and the police ask for her help in catching him, which she does, then they thank her for risking her life by arresting her for prostitution and telling her family and priest about her STDs. RUDE! UNGRATEFUL!
Olivia keeps telling her they can get her into counseling and rehab, but none of those things are going to help her pay rent. Jeannie (arquette) also doesn't seem like she's addicted to drugs, she's clearly a prostitute to afford the cost of living. Olivia comes across as in denial about how much the police can actually help people, and how the economy works (there always needs to be a reserve army of labour (unemployed) under capitalism, and those people have to commit crimes in order to live).
During the "intervention" scene I kept thinking about the Charlize Theron movie Monster where she tries to quit prostitution and get a normal job, but is rejected at every interview.
It's a fast paced and engaging episode, and Patricia Arquette is great, but you should still watch Monster instead.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Only the good jokes of Scary Movie
Fun parody thriller. It's 90% playing it serious, 10% jokes, I would have liked more jokes, but all the jokes they do have land. Imagine one of those parody movies from the 2000s like 'Vampires Suck' or 'Meet The Spartans' but JUST the good jokes, so like 80% less jokes. The mystery doesn't exist just for the jokes (it can't, sometimes they go ten minutes without a joke) it exists on its own terms, until the reveal of the killer... if you've seen 'The Woman In The Window' you'll know where this is going.
There isn't any other tv show like it, Hot Fuzz is the only thing I can think of that The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window can be compared to as they are both absurdist comedy mysteries.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Perverted (2009)
Olivia learns rape cops shouldn't make rape jokes
Olivia is framed for murder by a man she put in prison for serial rape who is out for revenge. He was raped in prison and thinks that Olivia organised it because she told him "a pretty boy like you will be popular in prison."
It's nice to see the show learn the lesson that our heroes shouldn't be happy someone is going to be sexually assaulted. During the confrontation Olivia asks him why he didn't go to the guards for help which is incredibly naive for a detective who went undercover in a prison to find a corrupt guard. It seems like every season our detectives learn a lesson about the failings of the criminal justice that they promptly forget. At least this one sticks as I don't think Olivia ever makes any more prison rape jokes/ threats again.
