Misfits (2009)
One of the best TV Series ever made
I may not be for everyone. It's true, it is a rude and explicit TV series that hasn't been made for being watched with the whole family, but that's one the reasons it makes it so special. Every single episode is pure gold, the characters are original and different, although they feel natural an not forced.
This is not about superheroes, but about five teenager "criminals" that get superpowers, and the way they use them. I used to think House was the only TV series I really liked, but now there's also Misfits, and I'm glad I discovered it. I know there's a bunch of other good stuff, but seriously, give it a change because this is beyond good. The actors are perfect for their roles, they fit and they are truly believable. There's comedy, there's drama and all of it perfectly mixed, but it's not only that, as If I had to pick up an adjective for this it clearly would be "coolness".
GO WATCH IT NOW. You won't repent.
District 9 (2009)
Disctrict 9 -
There is a lot to say about this movie, as it has to be one of the best sci-fi films I've ever had the chance to see. First of all, don't expect it to be some kind of Star Wars or Star Trek not even a common alien movie. This is completely different. The aliens live among human population and they are treated like scum, living in deplorable conditions like a lot of human beings actually live nowadays. So yes, they're aliens, but they're mostly humans with another skin, because they have FEELINGS, which is something that it seems to be always forgot when it comes to this type of movies. Why do aliens have to be cold as ice and appear operating with high-tech machines and computers? Of course they are technologically more advanced than we are, because they come from space with an enormous spaceship, but they act like humans would act if they were in this trouble.
It can't be classified as a drama, because it has a lot of action, but I can't say it's an action film because there's a lot of emotion and depth in it, so it becomes a lot more than only an action movie. What am I talking about, then? I'm talking about a mixture of styles, which makes the experience really unique and helps the personal immersion. Also, I have to add that Wikus is a great character who seems to be a coward at the beginning and ends like a hero, not because he is right with all he does or because he solves "all" of his problems (better see the movie to get this), things that don't happen, but because he is, in the end, a strong person and fights for his life and for the rights and lives of others.
My advise? Go see it, District 9 is much more than it seems.
Map of the Sounds of Tokyo (2009)
Map of the sounds of Tokyo
Well, I went to see this movie yesterday and it was not what I was expecting. Does that means it was worse than I imagined? At all, it just means it was different.
Coixet portrays a different perspective of Tokyo where the city becomes just an excuse to show the loneliness of its two protagonists, who are literally lost in a decaying world and don't know how to get out of it. Ryu, the Japanese girl, is an assassin who gets paid for its job, and David is an Spanish living in Tokyo, who has lost his wife recently and feels his life has nothing but emptiness. Both found themselves alone and feel they need each other, but things are not easy and there are some scars that will never be healed.
This is NOT "Lost in Translation" and this is NOT about Tokyo but about human feelings. If you want to see a more realistic movie about Japanese culture and you think you might like this movie because you're a fan of everything related to it, you might be very disappointed. If you go there with no expectations and you just want to get immersed by its story, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
That being said, it contains very explicit sex scenes, so be careful little children. I don't think it's a movie any kid would like to see or appreciate, anyways.
