Otousan no tabako (2007)
wonderful movie
"Otousan no tabako" is a Japanese short movie made in 2007.
This story begins with a little girl named Sarah trying to buy cigarettes. She always wants to buy cigarettes. But she and her mother both know that it is bad for her health. Her mother scolds Sarah severely for buying cigarettes. Why should she buy it, it is for her sick father.
I like this movie. But it was a little difficult for me. Sarah knows that she should not buy cigarettes for her father who is not well. So she has two mixed feelings for her father. To me, it is a very difficult choice for a young girl to make. When she finally brings home a cigarette, her father coughs and says that cigarettes is no longer nneeded The scene then switches to a picture book reading scene. The scene where she and her mother are smiling and reading next to the bed is very funny, but I could associate it with the fact that the father is dead. This scene makes me feel a little sad. However, I feel that it is a wonderful movie that makes me think about many things.
Spielzeugland (2007)
good movie
"Spielzeugland" is a German short film. This film was made in 2007 and was directed by Jochen Alexander Freydank. It won the 2009 Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
Marianne is at a loss to answer her son Heinrich's question about why her neighbors suddenly disappear. Her son has a Jewish friend, David. Marianne is hesitant to tell her son about the forced removal of the Jews by Nazi Germany, and she lies to him that they are going to a "Toy Land". One morning, however, she finds that her son has disappeared along with his Jewish neighbors.
I like this film. The film is only 13 minutes long, but clearly depicts the Holocaust and the cruelty of racism. As the story unfolds, Marian realizes that her son is not on the train, and in order to save at least her neighbor David, she rescues him by acting as if he is on the wrong train. The expressions on the faces of the Jews and parents around her at this time are hard to describe and sad. I find this scene very emotional. For these reasons I think this film should be seen by many people.
The Lunch Date (1989)
Interesting movie
"The Lunch Date" is a 1989 American short film directed by Adam Davidson.
It begins with a wealthy white woman hurrying through a train station. She bumps into a man at the station and drops her bag. He is a black man and is obviously trying to help her. However, she reacts as if the man is trying to steal something that belongs to her. By dropping her bag, she misses the train and tries to eat her salad at a cafe, but when she goes to get a fork and comes back, the black man is sitting at his seat eating his salad.
I love this movie. The film tells the story of a wealthy white woman who is mistaken. She looks at them with disdain and suspicion, prejudiced only by their appearance as black people. But it is wrong and they have good intentions toward her. And she finally realizes it. I think this film is a very good film that teaches us in a short time that we should not judge people by their looks.
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
moving story
"Two Strangers who Meet Five Times" was released in 2017. The pair meet five different times in life on different occasions. The occasions are not shown in order. And as time goes by, their relationship improves, even if neither remembers the other.
I like this movie. The reason is due to the order of the scenes in this movie: the second time they meet at the ATM, Alistair is prejudiced and behaves badly towards Samir, who is Asian. The third time we meet Alistair, he is not like that. As you watch the story, wondering why, the reason becomes clear. When the two meet for the last time, they are a volunteer helper and a patient. I was very moved by the scene where they gradually put aside their prejudices and meet again as simply human beings. This film is wonderful because it teaches us the importance of treating people equally without racial or gender prejudice.
I thought it showed Alistair changing his mind about how he treats others. What is important is humanity, not race. In that sense, I thought it was a good movie.
Born with It (2015)
A thought-provoking story
"Born With It" is a short film released in 2015.
This short film follows Keisuke, an African-Japanese elementary school student, as he gradually comes to terms with the differences in his appearance from his Japanese counterpart.
The story begins on his first day of school.
When he tries to join the circle of boys during recess, one of them tells Keisuke to leave with a frightened look on his face. When asked why, he says that the reason for his different skin color is because he has a disease called AIDS, which they can pass on to themselves. Keisuke begins to investigate with one of the boys to see if he is really sick.
I like this film. Because by watching this movie, I can understand that racism and lack of knowledge about it is not a good thing. The main character, Keisuke, is actually Japanese like his classmates, only darker skinned, and he is not sick. Even though the disease AIDS can affect anyone regardless of race, the classmates bully Keisuke because of their vague knowledge. This can happen not only to them, but also to themselves, and we cannot attack anyone. However, I like this movie very much because it teaches us that even a little bit of it is not a good thing and how important it is to acquire the right knowledge.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Touching movie
"Three Days in Kamakura" is a 2012 short film. The story is about a couple, David and Keiko, who are not doing well in their marriage. David works at an English school for children, and one day after school, he waits for the mother of one of his students, Jay, but she never shows up. David and Keiko decide to take care of him for a while, and as they spend time with Jay, they begin to repair their relationship with each other.
I like this movie mainly because it is a touching, family love movie. The film is about a couple who are not getting along and the boy who connects them. One of the things I find very interesting about it is that both Keiko and David's disagreements are based on compassion. The film is very moving and empathetic as it depicts the many different feelings that people have, from not wanting to lose a child to thinking that the other person would be disappointed if they knew about it. The scene where David and Keiko have an honest conversation is the best part of the film. Thus, I like this movie because it is a touching story.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Surprising Ending
"J'attendrai le suivant..."is a 2002 French short film.
The story begins with a lonely woman walking home alone. On her way home, she sees a couple hugging on the escalator. Later, she rides the subway, and a man begins to talk. He says he is looking for someone to be his partner because he is tired of living alone and his boring life. He has a little discussion with another passenger in the middle of this and says that the woman who is interested in him should get off at the next stop.
I do not like this movie very much, because it was difficult for me to understand what the film wanted to express at one viewing. At first I did not understand why the man did not get off with the woman at the train stop. The truth is that the man was talking to the other passengers but it was all a joke. The main female character also believed the man's words. That is very pitiful. It was difficult for me to understand what this film really wants to tell people. Thus, I did not like this movie.
Lifted (2006)
Interesting movie
"Lifted" was made in 2006. One night, a boy is sleeping alone in his isolated house and is about to be abducted by a UFO. However, the novice alien is unable to manipulate the light from the UFO and is unable to get the boy out of the house. The rookie tries again and again, but the end result is unimaginable! I like this movie because it is a very straightforward story. The story is about a newcomer who tries his best to kidnap a boy by UFO. At the end of the movie, when the newcomer finally manages to carry the boy, he lets go of the switch and drops the boy. It is not a movie that we have to think deeply about as anyone can easily understand it. Thanks to that, you can watch it easily and enjoy it while having fun because there are many scenes that make you laugh. I think not only me but probably most people can chuckle at this movie. For that reason, I would recommend this film to everyone.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Fish out of water
The title of this film is " Fish Out of Water". It was made in 2005. The film is a short movie with no dialogue, about a man who takes a boat to the city to commute to work. One day he is attracted to a beautiful blonde woman and things gradually take a strange turn. I do not like this movie. There are two reasons. The first is that I felt the story was monotonous. The screen switches to the next day, and the feelings are visually expressed, but I was not interested in the fact that more and more people were getting on the boat each time. Second, I did not feel the story had any meaning. In this story, the number of people on the boat kept increasing, and eventually a man realized that he was being taken advantage of and dove into the sea to commute to work. I don't like it much because I don't feel the story has any deep meaning. I'm not saying you shouldn't watch this movie because some people may think that it is unique, but I personally didn't like it very much.
Knick Knack (1989)
funny movie
"Knick Knack" is a short film released in 1989.
A snowman in a snow globe struggles to get out of the snow globe to meet a beautiful bikini doll in the outside world. He tries various things, including using a drill and a bomb, but he can't get out, and all the while the bikini girl keeps trying to seduce the snowman.
I like this movie. There are two reasons. One is that the snowman is shown in the film in a very cute way. This movie has no dialogue. It is also a very short film. However, I feel that the snowman's desperate attempt to meet the mermaid doll gives comfort to the viewers. Second is the way the story ends. Halfway through the film, the snowman is able to get out for a moment when the snow globe falls off the shelf. Just when he is about to finally meet a girl, the snow globe falls from above and he is unable to get out again. The ending of this story makes the viewer laugh. I like this ending very much. For these reasons, this movie is very funny and I like it.
Father and Daughter (2000)
moving film
The title of this film is "Father and Daughter". It is a short film animation and was released in 2000. In this film, a father disappears after leaving his young daughter from the shore. The daughter continues to go to that shore, thinking of her beloved father. The film has no dialogue and appears monotonous at first glance, but there is much to read into it. First, the daughter is always riding her bicycle. I suspect that this bicycle expresses the passage of time in the absence of dialogue. Second, in the final scene, as the daughter gets older and lies down in the boat she found, the scene changes and she is reunited with her father. The point is that the daughter has become young again. From this scene, there are two interpretations: either this is a dream of the daughter, or the daughter has died and is reunited with her father in heaven. However, since there is no dialogue, the correct answer is not known. Therefore, this is a film that many people should watch because it is very fascinating and allows for a lot of different considerations in a short amount of time.
