Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Great Fun!
I saw this movie in 2D and still loved it.
Of course, I am a BIG fan of Seth Rogan and his character had the best part with the best lines.... so I could be a little biased.
The humour in this show had me laughing out loud several times. I was with my 9-year-old niece and I think she was laughing more at my laughing than at the actual movie.
There are, of course, some aspects that didn't make sense as far as physics go - but what the hey - it's a cartoon! If I can believe the storyline behind 'Face/Off', I can certainly go for this one....
ENJOY!
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Long, Dumb and Boring
Well, maybe it wasn't actually long as it seemed. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen.
In reading some of the high reviews of this movie, perhaps those people are intellectuals or movie critics looking for something other than what I would look for.
I'm just an average Joe, watching a movie to be entertained - not particularly looking for the higher message. This movie totally missed the mark for me. I didn't understand what the point was, and cannot fathom how others rated this highly.
Although I have noticed that it seems that almost every movie on IMDb has a rating in the 7s... It makes no sense to me that a movie this dumb would get such a high rating.....
Anyway, I don't recommend this movie.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A classic
Seeing Shawshank as the IMDb #1 did not surprise me a bit. This movie has the heart & soul to be a favourite for a long time to come.
I like the reality of the unfairness of the whole situation. There is no glossing over the painful stuff. He was innocent but still jailed. He did get raped. His chance DID get wiped out to have his story confirmed. What a waste.
I read some people calling this a 'feel-good' story. Perhaps in the end, but other than the relief of freedom, there wasn't much to feel good about. Talk about a hard-fought battle. And it isn't even over... His life is better than it was, but still sucks considering everything he lost, considering he can never go back, considering he is always a fugitive...
If you're feeling bummed out about your own life, this is a good movie to watch to realize that things could always be worse.
9 (2009)
What happened?
I am still scratching my head trying to figure out what the point of this movie was.
Of course, I was set to see something I've seen before - like a Matrix / Maximum Overdrive kind of plot - but still expected an actual plot, even if it was an overused one....
So, the descriptions say that humanity is threatened...well - from what I saw, there were no humans. And only a handful of...what... sack people? robots? What were they?? And so they contain the soul of the scientist. So what? and so what now? There are STILL no humans.... and why is the soul of ONE person going to make any difference? Once the sack robots break down, or die off, or whatever it is they do, then what? Watching this movie just made me angry. I gave it even a 3 because the graphics are good, and I like Christopher Plummer, and because I actually did watch the whole thing, so it must have kept my mild interest enough for me to want to know if the movie ever came to any logical conclusion (yes, I have turned off movies without finishing them). But, I was not satisfied in that regard, and still am left confused and irritated by this movie.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
Don't bother unless you're REALLY bored
This movie wasn't terrible.
But it was terribly boring.
The box says that it is extremely funny. There were a couple of cute parts that made me giggle. But mostly it was a lot of sighing & shifting waiting for something interesting to happen.
And the main guy (I already forget his name....) does have SAD SACK down pat - I guess that's good considering the way the movie goes...
And who the heck dressed that guy - his pants never went past his ankles. OK, that's pretty low priority on movie reviewing, however, I have never seen a guy wear pants like that. No wonder she dumped him.
Anyway, it was a very very forgettable movie.
Breakfast with Scot (2007)
LOVED it!
I had never heard of the movie at all before seeing it - saw it from my movie channel...
As soon as I saw the Toronto Maple Leafs, I was set up to be disappointed, but am glad I perservered. Hate to say it as a Canadian myself, but Canadian-made movies do not inspire the best expectations.
I am SO happy about having seen Breakfast with Scot. I just loved the whole idea that the gay couple was worried about the kid being "too gay".
Just because I haven't seen a kid like Scot, doesn't mean they aren't out there, however, that was the only part that seemed a little far-fetched to me. Everything else seemed like that's the way it would happen given that circumstance... The acting was fantastic and the plot itself was just so unique and refreshing.
And, of course, having watched it with zero information, I had no idea there was any kind of gay theme whatsoever until the plot revealed itself. This movie is not about being gay - it is about relationships. The 'gay' part of this movie should hold no bearing on whether to see it or not. I am not gay and I LOVED it. I bought a copy. In fact, I bought two copies and gave one to friends of mine that I felt might be not open-minded enough to see it on my simple recommendation. They enjoyed it too.
Everyone should see this movie. You will laugh out loud!
