I really don't know why so many "professional" critics don't like this movie, in my opinion it's a great movie and it really is one of those movies that you have to see at least once in your life.
From the beginning of the film, you can see how Zefirelli wanted to tell the important details but at the same time not to dwell so much on Francis' life before his conversion, with few flashbacks at the beginning of the film about Francis' life before the war. From the beginning there are also very beautiful scenes, like when Francis decides to go out of the window of his house to follow a little bird and realizes the wonders of nature.
Another of the points that people complain about is the script or that many of the dialogues of Francis are "religious mumbo-jumbo", I really do not know what they mean, the dialogues, although some are somewhat strange are also very good, especially those of Pope Innocent III and Francis at the end of the film, one of them is from the Pope, "In our obsession of original sin, we too often forget original innocence.".
Riz Ortelani's score and Donovan's soundtrack is also one of the good points of the movie, Donovan's songs are truly beatiful, specially the title track ("Brother Sun, Sister Moon") and "The Little Church", i haven't watched the original italian version but i have heard that Claudio Baglioni's songs are also beatiful.
To cut to the chase, the movie is wonderful in every way, the script, the scenes, the characters, the music, everything comes together to create one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen in my life.
