Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
Expected more from this movie
No doubt Kingsley Ben-Adir did an excellent job playing a role of the man himself. Throughout the film he had me convinced that he was the man himself. I must commend him for the job depicting a man who for the past five decades has been part of our history. I do not believe that it was easy to do so.
Above all, I must commend Ziggy Marley and the team for bringing this cultural icon to life. In spite of these positive comments, I expected more from this film. A 1hr 37 min film does not do justice to a man who has contributed significantly to our pop culture. For this reason, I give it a 6 over 10.
Thriller 40 (2023)
Documentary Worth Watching
The album Thriller has a special place in my heart and this has probably to do with the fact that like everyone who happened to live in the last few decades of the 20th century, the album would hold a deeper meaning. For those that grew and lived during this time period, little did we anticipate that this album would continue to remain popular well into 21st century and we would still be enjoying this album as we become older and greyer. What's more interesting is that the current generation are enjoying this masterpiece and this will hopefully be the trend in the decades to follow. Big up to the mastermind.
Sidney (2022)
A befitting tribute to a man who exuded excellence
I call this documentary a befitting tribute to a man who has paved the way for a number of black actors that exist in Hollywood today. This is not to say that the work has not finished. A lot still needs to be done in so far as black representation in Hollywood. Other than that, I can say that as someone who lives in the 21st century, we are certainly on the right track. There is no doubt that Mr. Poitier's road to becoming the success that he would eventually become was a long and lonely one, but it was worth it. The world would not have known the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington and many others had this man not existed.
We Need to Talk About Cosby (2022)
The man has skeletons
There is no doubt that we all have skeletons but Bill Cosby? I have grown up watching this man in The Cosby Show, Ghost Dad to name but a few. To see the sort of man that this program has depicted him to be has shattered my preconceptions of whom I expected this man to be. For so long, Dr. William Henry Cosby depicted himself as a moralist even using his programs to influence children about the value of education. There is no doubt that because of Dr. Cosby, I found myself going as far as university even attaining a PhD like him. He was my role model. I even wanted to have a family that was similar to his. Yet, W. Kamau Bell's documentary has demonstrated to me that this man has a complicated life. What I have come to learn from this documentary is that life or better still we as humans are complex figures. To the outside world, we depict ourselves as moralists or angels but when one digs deeper, we do carry skeletons in our closet. What this documentary has shown me is that the man certainly has skeletons. Unfortunately, these skeletons had to reveal themselves at his old age.
