A sad moment for all those who loved playing Mutant Chronicles
9 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This i sad interpretation of Mutant Chronicles. I grew up with Mutant CHronicles and the role play blew my mind away, the imagination ran wild when composing own stories in the life of a high ranked officer in the Bauhaus. I actually looked forward to this movie and immediately read up on some of the stuff from the past. Like the different clans, the heroes and so on. I got my hopes up and that was the worst thing I could have done.

The plot of the movie is actually not that bad, it has a steady pace and the plot twist are... well there aren't any. What baffles me is how the writers couldn't come up with a better story about the key to destroy the machine, its a bloody twin tipped sword. I could have sent the writers some of my old notes from a RP-session and it would have been better.

The characters of MC have endless character depth given to them by the role play and their background with the different fractions. In the movie character depth is overlooked and truly interesting heroes are not even properly introduced or killed off within minutes.

CGI and costume are terrible. I looked forward to the mutant chronicles we all came to love. Huge guns, amazing swords and armor that would look NFL players look like whimps. This isn't the case in the movie. The costumes reminds of WW2 and sky captain of tomorrow, and in this case thats not what you expect. The story is supposed to play out in 2707 and the costumes makes you doubt that. The CGI-environment is actually quite good but you never get an explanation why the earth is in a state of what seem to be an eclipse. The fighting on the other hand is crap. Someone wrote it reminded of sin city and it does, but in a bad way. It feels like the somewhere in the movie instead of doing old fashioned blood splatter figured out that CGI splatter is cheaper.

Ron Perlman and Thomas Jane make dull performances. John Malkovic does paycheck mode acting a la Eragorn. I blame the director for destroying this chance to make a great movie with good actors.
