The Fall Guy (2024)
Pure FUN
The Fall Guy is nothing but pure fun.
The writing is not always great, but the actors elevate it whenever the script fails to deliver. The action is amazing except for one secene where they used some strange effects. The acting performances are just great. Ryan Gosling is at his top.
The movie is shot very well. The camere movements are dynamic, which elevates the excitement. The film is also well paced and the stunts are amazing.
The characters and the story is not a big deal, but most of the jokes deliver. It's not the best movie of the year, but my personal favourite so far. We need more movies like this, movies that give you positive energy, that are just pure fun.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Haunting
Eyes Wide Shut is a haunting, thought-provoking, sexy and well-done movie.
The acting performances from Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise are amazing. The sets look stunning, while the cinematography is great. Music was also haunting and fit the movie very well. Furthermore, this film is edited so well, that the 2 hour 40 minutes long runtime flew by extremely quickly.
The tension between the two main characters was presented amazingly onto the screen. I also like the fact that we, as the audience, have to decide whether this is a satanist cult or just rich men trying to have as much sex as possible. The scene where William confesses to Alice is very emotional, while the ending is on point and funny.
Civil War (2024)
Unsettling movie
Civil War is a good movie with a few mistakes. Both benefits and disadvantages come from the film trying to be artistic. It's shot extremely beautifully, I think I can predict an Oscar nomination for cinematography.
The story tries to tell us how important journalism is, but in the mean time I question the morality of these people, who go there and photograph people murdering each other. The president's character is both believable and ridiculous.
The movie doesn't tell you what happened, or what caused the civil war to happen, I actually wanted to now the background, but we didn't need it, so it's fine.
The acting performances were weird, I liked Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny, but Kiersten Dunst was not good in this film.
What threw me out from the experience several times was the music. What the hell was that. There were several intense scenes, where the music was just disturbingly happy or they just didn't there.
Inside Man (2006)
Quite good
Inside Man is a good movie. The characters are interesting, but we've seen so many like them except for the antagonist. He was unique, I liked him the most. The plot twist drove the movie, but without it the movie would be week.
The first half of the movie was boring to me, but that's only because it was going exactly like Money Heist, but of course this was before that, so it's not the movie's fault. The music felt out of place, that was the part of the movie, which I didn't like. Besides that I also didn't like the end. It didn't feel like an ending, it would have been more satisfying if we were shown what happened to the other characters. Solid movie, the plot twist makes it 8.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Weird
The reason why I won't give 10 for this movie is because I didn't like it in the beginning. I couldn't find out if it wants to be a comedy or a drama. There were many funny things in the film (for example the tone of the basterds), but the whole idea of laughing at this film disgusted me since it is still a movie about nazis. While stating this I also have to adress that the movie incorrectly suggests that every German soldier was a nazi and wanted to die for Hitler (there was one exception).
With all this said I must praise this movie too. It was just an amazing, thrilling ride. The characters were well-written, the actors did fantastic jobs, especially Christoph Waltz. I was genuinely surprised when I realized this story was fiction.
The Game (1997)
Twists and Turns
The Game is an extremely well-executed movie. The main character was interesting from the beginning. Then I thought I know what the goal of this movie was and I was actually right. They wanted him to realize how rude he was with others. But of course later in the movie this thought changed, because of the twist and turns, which really got me. In the middle of watching the film I realised that I had seen this movie before, but that meant nothing, because all the twist got me.
The acting of Michael Douglas was outstanding, maybe this is typecasting, but it was certainly good. I was gobsmacked by this, amazing film.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Hard to watch
The Talented Mr. Ripley would be a very good movie if there was at least one relatable character. All of the characters we meet throughout the film are obnoxious. I started to hate Tom (Matt Damon) the second he didn't say he hadn't been going to Princeton. And all the rich characters just look down on everybody. Of course that's realistic, but a movie should have one character who's at least trying to be better. The acting is great, the movie as a whole looks great. The set design and the costumes were outstanding. But at the end of the day this movie is just okay, because it's hard to watch with its obnoxious characters.
Schindler's List (1993)
One of the best films of all time
Schindler's List is one of the best movies of all time. It achieved something many films cannot. It's more than 3 hours long, but it keeps the viewer's attention. In the beginning it starts off as an interesting story with interesting characters. By the middle, the film starts to get brutal and heavy. While in the end it becomes incredibly emotional.
The movie is shot beautifully, the fact that it was shot black and white is perfect, because it captures the feel of the 40s. The acting performances are outstanding from Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley. While watching this film I wasn't thinking how great the acting was, because who I saw were characters, they felt like characters and not actors. It's no question that this is one of the o best films of all time.
Scarface (1983)
Great movie with an unsatisfying ending
Scarface starts really well. The characters are interesting, the story is interesting. By the two-third the movie reaches its high point and then starts going down. The direction and cinematography of this film is really stylistic and I like it. It's artistic, but sometimes more than it should be. I like how the camera turns, but I think they overused it and they always did it slowly. So the movie became longer than it should have been.
The characters are well-written, the acting is great. I enjoyed the movie very much, but the ending was so cheap. The way they ended the film was just dumb and unsatisfying.
American Gangster (2007)
Good movie
American Gangster is a good movie. It's interesting, it's well-paced, even though it's two and a half hours long. It's brutal and realistic, which is great, but the main character, Richie wasn't relatable enough. I couldn't really root for him, because he was very cruel with his wife. Maybe this is just personal preference, because I know this is as realistic as it can get, but it was a little disturbing for me. I also didn't like that they tried to make us feel with Frank Lucas in the end. 15 years was not enough for this guy, he did not become the good guy, because he helped turn in some other bad guys. From their perspective he is a traitor. So this film is far from perfect, but it's good and that's just perfectly enough.
Jaws (1975)
Great film
Jaws is a great film. What's the best about this film is how real it feels. I'm not sure, whether everything is accurate or not, but it feels like it is. This film is both funny and brutal, in other words: brave. It's incredibly well-shot, it's well-edited, well-directed. The music is really good. The characters are relatable and well-established except for Quint. He was weird and sometimes I felt he came from a different universe. There is emotion in the movie too, for example I wanted to punch the mayor's face, because he caused most problems.
Overall, this movie is great, but nothing more.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Great film
A Beautiful Mind is a great movie. It's really emotionally driven by the second half. There is a big reveal in the middle of the film, which shocked me. But if I think it over, I should have seen it coming, because there were some things I didn't like about the acting (eye movement), some weird stuff regarding Ed Harris's character. So everything was clear to me in the end, which elevates the experience for me. Both Russel Crowe and Jennifer Connelly gave amazing acting performances.
The cinematography was a little strange in some places and the movie really slowed down before the last 15 minutes.
That's the only bad thing I can say about this movie, so it really deserves a 9/10.
Forrest Gump (1994)
Beautiful movie
Forrest Gump is one of the most beautiful stories out there. It's very emotional and I love how we as the audience saw everything through the main character's eyes. This gave the opportunity to show political events without and partiality, which I incredibly like and respect. Tom Hanks gave an amazing performance. The music was really good, the cinematography is outstanding. There were few impossibly beautiful shots, for example the tree in the sunset. The only criticism I have is that the three old guys in the bar didn't age much throughout the 30-40 years, but the point of their existence was the humor, which was on point. Overall, this is among the best movies of all time.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Perfection
Dune: Part Two is a perfection. I made a mistake when I was watching it for the first time: I was trying to be critical. Don't do that. So for the second watch I went to an IMAX theater so that I could just enjoy it and I did. This movie is absolutely incredible. The cinematography is one of the best of all movies I'v seen. You feel like you're there on Arrakis, the characters feel real, their emotions feel real. The music is just incredibly cinematic. The visual effects are stunning. The sandworm-riding was the best part of the movie, it always looked more gorgeous each time we saw it. I cannot say the pacing is perfect, but it's certainly very good. During the first time watch I felt a little bored in the beginning.
The characters are all very interesting, my favourite being Stilgar of course, who probably deliveres all the jokes of the film. Javier Bardem is just amazing, but the best acting pefromance was given by Austin Butler. He was so intense. Timotheé Chalamet was also really good. These two are probably going to be nominated for a lot of awards. But everyone was great, I especially love Stellan Skarsgard's Vladimir Harkonnen.
All in all this movie is absolutely incredible, it's no question that it's a 10/10. Years later, when people look back on 2024, this film will probably come to their mind.
Fair Play (2023)
Inconsistent script
This movie has a really uninteresting story with good actors. This makes a mediocre movie. It starts with an interesting setup and two characters that love each other. Obviously that changes throughout the film, but it's executed very badly. The actions of the characters are far from logical and they were so annoying. Few actions originate from the ones before. The film is very inconsistent. They should have hired a writer, who writes character-arcs. But as I've stated before this movie is not a disaster, it's just annoying how much better it could have been. The acting is good, but it still doesn't make the script better.
The Creator (2023)
Not bad, but lacks a good script
I was very excited for this film, since I love science fiction and the trailers set up an interesting world and showed beautiful visuals. I shouldn't have been that excited, because this movie is not good. The weakest point of it was the story and I'm sure the director's cut is better, but the movie we got is too simple and the writer didn't expand on any idea, didn't ask anything from the audience. I enjoyed this movie more than most, I think it was brave to make USA the big bad, but as I've written before they're just bad and stubborn. They don't have motivation, there's no real reason why they want to destroy anything AI related, since it was explained that the catastrophe was caused by humans. Overall this is a solid, fun movie, but it could've been so much better.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Good, but too long
This movie tells a very sad story. It's shot beautifully, but it's really slow and long. The writing, directing is quite good, while the acting is amazing, especially from Lily Gladstone, but there were no relatable characters, everybody wanted the land, the oil and the money. This is based on a true story, so it's not the fault of the writing, but I need one character that I can root for. The cinematography and visual effects make this movie look really good, but it could have used much more editing. This movie is way too long. It's really slow too and this a very bad combo. This movie is good, but far from perfect.
The Killer (2023)
A very good movie, but it could've been better.
This is a really tense, slow and interesting story. The action is really good and the story moves forward very well, despite the fact that the movie gives you plenty of time to catch your breath. The editing, the directing is good and the sound is exceptional. Michael Fassbender thrives in this narratively-driven, well-written story. Opposing to this is that the killer is the only characger, who has something to do in this movie. I expected to have more characters with motivation, backstory or just more role. This film has a very good story, but it fails to be a top tier action film, because of the pacing.
Next Goal Wins (2023)
Boring, bad movie with minimal fun.
I love watching and playing football, I loved the stuff I have seen from Taika Waititi and I watched this movie with my friends. This assured the good experience, but the film surprisingly couldn't find out if it wants to be a comedy or a drama. It's not entertaining to watch a movie where every second joke is bad. The movie is not captivating, it's predtictable and boring sometimes. That means that there are exciting and funny moments too, which save this movie from being a complete disaster. Michael Fassbender was good, but without good quality writing that means almost nothing. This is probably my least favourite movie of 2023.
Napoleon (2023)
A boring and long movie
I watched this film with low expectations. This movie is neither fun nor good. I was bored, I knew what would happen and surprisingly, since I don't like war movies, my favourite parts were the battles. They looked amazing. The acting performances were solid, but just like in Killers of the Flower Moon there were no relatable characters, there wasn't anybody to root for and I need that in a film. This movie is long, boring and does not show anything new. Ridley Scott's acting, the cinematography Joaquin Phoenix's and Vanessa Kirby's acting could not save it. I think this movie is really mediocre.
Semmelweis (2023)
Good, but far from perfect.
This film tells a beautiful story with using a few clichés that make this movie only good. It's the kind of film you have probably watched several times, but I think it's worth watching, because few movies give you the joy this one has. The acting performances are great except for the little daughter. I could not understand half of what she said. It's well-shot, well-edited, the production and costume design is amazing. Lajos Koltai proves that he is a good director, but this film is kind of monotonous, slow. It can be boring ometimes and it's very predictable. Overall the film is good, but it could've been a lot better.
Anyone But You (2023)
Fun, but not good.
Fun, but not good. The writing is far from good, there are plenty of cringe scenes. The film shows us rich people and makes us want to experience the things, only the rich can. On the other hand the movie is so much fun and joy, but sometimes they went a little too far with the jokes. The film tries to build on the beauty of the whole cast, but I think that was a mistake. Every person in this film has no real problem. They look beautiful, they have people to love and they have money. Even though the movie tells you that Bea (Sydney Sweeney) has problems with her life, but it does not seem real, because she can do whatever she wants. Overall it isn't a bad film, but it's far from good.
Argylle (2024)
Fun, but not good.
Don't expect anything else than fun from this movie and you'll not dislike it. The action and the visual effects in the film are intentionally bad in some scenes, but those threw me out of the experience. It would've worked more for me if they don't try to separate fiction and reality with the quality of the action and CGI. The movie also tried to be funnier than it really is. The marketing campaign mislead me to think that Henry Cavill was going to one of the main roles, but he wasn't. The cinematography was sometimes good, but sometimes surprisingly bad. I couldn't see what's happening.
Sam Rockwell and Bryan Carnston were amazing, Bryce Dallas Howard was also good, but the other cast members did not have their time to shine.
This is a fun movie, but I like it more than I should.
