The Woodsman (2012)
Does what it set out to do.
Hi. I'm a frequent watcher of Found Footage/Mockumentary films and enjoy the genre.
Let's be honest, many folks go with found footage to fill in for what you're missing - actors, script, location. It's to have a built in 'out'.
I was pleasantly surprised with this film. The lead actor mainly carries it. He's very charismatic, and a welcome change from running around the woods shouting someone's name. He's not going for an Oscar here, but he's got some acting chops. When everything starts to go wrong, you feel for him. This is something that's often missing in Found Footage films.
The script, while nothing special, keeps it simple and that's a smart move. There's an edge to it that I also quite enjoyed. The scares are short, sharp and brutal.
In short, if you're a FF fan, or if you want to pass the time for 90 minutes this is worth a watch.
Bad Ben (2016)
Low budget and fun
More than great actors, a brilliant script, or incredible effects the thing that transcends the lack of any or all of these things is "Did you love the film you were making."
It's clear within the first 10 minutes that Mr. Bach, the sole actor in the film, loves found footage films in general and the film he is making in particular. To date this series has spawned ten sequels and continuations which is a tribue to Nigel Bach's love of the genre and entertainment in general.
If you don't like found footage, or horror, or indie low budget films, then this film is unlikely to land with you. I'd say give it a shot anyway, and appreciate someone making a pretty good film on less than $400 according to media reports.
For those of you that like found footage in all the goofy silliness that can sometimes result, you're in for a treat.
While it might take you a few minutes to get used to his delivery, it's worth the effort, and the invitation to the silliness that can be this genre will be there in all it's goofy glory.
Highly recommended.
Dashcam (2021)
Wading through the sludge for it's own sake.
I will usually watch any found footage movie and at least consider the time well spent, even if gold was not panned that particular time.
This is not that.
There's an idea that if a certain level of obnoxious is entertaining, then even more must be more entertaining. That's how we arrive at this particular film.
There is nothing redeeming about anyone. I either didn't care about the characters, or if I did I wanted them to die painfully now, please, and the sooner the better.
The lead is quite possibly the most cretinous character drawn from all the most unpleasant human characteristics. There is nothing about this character that is redeemable in any way, shape or form.
There was a gem at the heart of this script, and I think given proper development it could have been something that at least wasn't whatever it was I just watched.
The sad part about that is that it's all thrown on the fire in the service of yet another obnoxiousism of someone who would have been voted most likely to be murdered of pretty much any group they were a part of.
Great effects are pretty much the only things on offer for this particular Blumhouse venture. I was surprised to see Blumhouse collecting garbage like this. They can usually do better.
That's about it really. I love horror films, I love found footage and I hated this film. Anything else would be just telling you how much I hated it and, if I screamed that for 67 minutes, I would have only begun to scratch the surface of how annoying this person will be on your screen.
Deprivation (2019)
Hi. I enjoy horror movies. This was pretty good.
I have to say they did a good job and they got me. I was feeling a little condescending at parts and they ended up pulling off a pretty good indie horror flick here.
This is not an effects-fest, nor does it claim to be. It's three guys experimenting in sleep deprivation at a buddy's cabin and it sticks with that.
I wasn't sure what to expect - but the actor I had the most concerns about really created a character with some heart that the other two could work with.
I enjoy horror movies. I sometimes feel the vitreol lobbed at smaller endevours with limited resources are asked to deliver at a level they never claimed to be in.
If you are looking to have a few beers and spend 90 minutes watching something cooked up by a few guys with some talent you could do worse than give this one a go.
I enjoy the documentary format and this is a pretty good starter project. I'd like to see more from this Writer.
