Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Solid plot, sloppy writing and acting
I walked in with high expectations after hearing of the positive reception among critics. I gotta say, I was kind of disappointed by what I got.
The movie started strong though. The gore and brutal opening scene and the presentation of the title were one of the highlights for me. Overall, I really enjoyed the splatter part of the movie. The plot taking place mostly in a dilapidated apartment building in the middle of the night was a great setting choice and Alyssa Sutherland's portrayal of the possessed Ellie was terrific.
However, the movie was mostly weakened by the clichéd writing and dialogue, which made it seem like a B-movie. You don't just stand there and whimper while your mother is clearly the demon in person fully covered in blood. You scream and sob and run away! The acting of most of the cast wasn't as convincing as Sutherland's either. Is it really that hard to properly cry or scream? The ending was a good throwback to the beginning and concluded the movie in a proper way.
All in all, a solid movie with many weak elements that make it not as memorable as the original entry.
Family Guy: Peternormal Activity (2015)
Superb episode!
I love the horror genre so I was thrilled when I watched this episode. Even though the premise went in a different direction than I had imagined, I thought it really managed to make me both laugh and get the chills. The friendship between Peter and his Drunken Clam mates is once again the highlight of this episode as we see them enjoying their freetime writing a horror film and facing differences during the climactic scene. The story is then rounded off by the release of their film project. The conversation between Peter and Lois after the alleged killing of the janitor is one of the most hilarious scenes in the show's history.
My only critical point: The subplot revolving Brian and Stewie. Either the writers were too lazy to come up with a side plot or they intentionally try to make Brian worse with every episode. Therefore only nine stars.
Family Guy: American Gigg-olo (2016)
Great A-plot, daft B-plot
A surprisingly solid episode. The A-plot about Quagmire becoming a gigolo provided a good (but I guess unintentional) commentary about the consequences of labor strikes and the abysses of sex work. Peter turning into the caricature of a pimp is once again a typical Peter move that is always a pleasure to watch. The HBO documentary parody was the icing of the cake.
The subplot concerning Brian and Stewie, however, was watchable at best. Brian being the usual shmuck is nothing new and nothing that will ever be funny. So is Stewie's annoyed response to his behavior, but him going so far to sabotage his employment at a workplace was the biggest let-down of the episode.
Overall a solid episode with a funny A-plot that deserved to be an episode on its own.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Beyond fantastic cinematic experience!
James Cameron surpassed himself once again with this gigant of a movie. I would recommend anyone to watch it just for the visuals because they are worth seeing at least once in one's lifetime. The crew spent over a year to develop the revolutionary underwater motion capture and it just paid off. Besides the visuals the movie excelled in its great cast and acting performances especially by Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver (as Kiri). I am not going to lie, the plot left a lot to be desired. It was nothing special, it was simple and predictable. But there was really no need for that. Everything else made up for it. Another thing that needs to be highlighted is James Cameron's ability to keep a good pacing despite the exaggerated length of the movie. Just like Titanic and the first Avatar, you won't notice how long it takes because of the stunning visuals and storytelling. Definitely a must-see.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Unfortunate execution of the plot but great in most aspects
After seeing Florence Pugh's previous work I knew that couldn't disregard this movie. The drama during the press tour reinforced my interest in that movie and I just couldn't wait to see what everyone was talking about.
To be honest, I agree with most of the critics that this movie failed in some aspects but I wouldn't call it a total flop. What bothered me the most was how the movie handled the plot twist that revealed the whole purpose of the plot's setting. Unfortunately, it wasn't executed properly and elaborately, which is such a pity because I really liked the idea of a simulated reality. If Olivia Wilde spent some more time on the last third of the movie, it could've been a great conclusion to an already good movie.
Despite the low quality of some plot parts, the movie managed to provide a decent direction from Olivia Wilde, great performances from the cast, especially Florence Pugh (I didn't expect anything less) and Chris Pine. Harry Styles received some criticism, which I can understand but I wouldn't call it a bad performance. It was a rather monotonous and forgettable one and he didn't seem to enjoy being on set.
I give this movie a solid 7 out of 10. I would've given it a 6 if it weren't for Florence. She stole the show.
Family Guy: Emmy-Winning Episode (2017)
Funny concept, poorly executed
This episode is self-awareness at its finest. The Griffin family plans to win an Emmy by trying to copy top quality TV shows like Breaking Bad, Modern Family etc.
In terms of comedy, the show does a good job parodying the TV shows they are trying to copy from. The whole framework story of the Griffins begging for an Emmy and at the same time criticizing their own show's lack of quality in recent years worked really well.
However, I also wished the episode managed to keep the thread of the premise. Unfortunately, the plot just jumped from one parody to another and then back again and eventually ended up concluding the framework story.
All in all, a solid episode with a funny and realistic concept but chaotically constructed.
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
Definitely a new concept but not a good one...
I'm usually not a fan of episodes that provide nothing new for the show, e.g. Clip shows etc. I still wanted to give this episode a chance since nowadays Family Guy is trying on new concepts for the show.
But I don't think the writers managed to create something that viewers might want to have again in the future. Replaying a former episode and adding commentary from the cast is not only a lazy idea but also a confusing one. It was hard to focus on anything since there were two plots happening at the same time and they weren't properly distinguished, which is why I couldn't figure out sometimes who was actually talking.
Despite the overall bad concept and quality, there were still some funny jokes and the self-awareness of the main cast has become so strong that you can just laugh about it. The guest appearance of Sarah Paulson also added some spice to the marital conflict between Peter and Lois.
To sum it up, the episode had a special concept but not a specially good one.
