The Stranger (2022)
Good acting but depressing vibe
The film is about how the police in Australia run an undercover sting operation to get confession out of a Child Murderer by having an Undercover Cop befriend him prentending to be a part of illegal gang.
The film is slow and the plot is filled with meaningless scenes. All the characters in this film seem depressed, like they are weary of their life. Mostly, the film takes place in dark/night in confined places. The background music also gives a gloomy vibe. Nobody is happy in this film.
The film should be watched due to following reasons a) Good Acting by two main actors b)Gripping background music c) Worn out, dark, cold locations depicted in the film, good effort in camera department
The film should be watched by those feeling sad but do not want to drink.
Usogui (2022)
A silly, entertaining movie
This review assumes you are an Indian and not much familiar with Japanese Comics called Manga on which this film is based.
All the characters in this film are Gamblers and almost every scene is people gambling or betting and cheating to win.
You should watch this film for a) The way the hero reveals how the person betting against him cheated. 2) Risky bets the hero makes against various opponents putting his life on line and giving the viewers a taste of adventure 3) Outlandish Gamblers with ridiculous personalities shown in Film 4) Cute Heroine and comedy scenes involving her.
Following things will put you down a) In one or two cases, how the hero catches his opponents cheating is not very clear b) Ending is left very open, which is frustrating for viewers wanting clear conclusion to story.
Thank God (2022)
Poor casting of Hero and Script not up to mark
The concept of this movie has been used in several Indian movies over decades. A person is hanging between life and death, goes to afterlife / heaven / hell and is allowed to revisit earth or his former life. To this, another common concept of a bad person realizing the effect of his actions on others and therefore repenting and making good of all his mistakes is added.
Movies of this sort are comedies with emotional moments in between. Here, the lead actor who is present in all scenes lacks capacity to act in comic scenes. To add to our woes, the comedy scenes are not that good themselves. Generally when the hero does not know how to act in a comedy, a side character like Brahmanandam, Johnny Lever or Rajpal Yadav is added to entertain the movie viewers. Emotional scenes are okayish but they are also let down by the hero. More role should have been given to other actors like hero's mother and Kanwaljeet Singh. Replace Siddarth Malhotra with Old Govinda and imagine the result.
Not recommended.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
If you liked Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you are going to feel underwhelmed with this film.
The School for Good and Evil is based on Novel Franchise of the same name. The novel has had 5 sequels till date, so it must be good. The film seems like an undercooked dish, where even if the ingredients are good, you will not like what comes to your plate.
The film has more bad than good. Still, I will list out the good first. The concept of the movie is good. It is a twist on classic fairytale world. The plot of the movie is also good. However, the way the plot or story is presented on screen is bad.
The first Harry Potter film is a good example of how to make such movies. The world building in this film is lacking. The entire world of this movie consists of a village Gavaldon and the titular school. So, the setting of this film seems shallow. In Harry Potter films, though it is mostly set in Hogwarts School, action also takes place in Privet Drive, Zoo, London, Diagon Alley, King's Cross Station and Hogwarts Express. Hogwarts itself is a complex setting, shown through shifting stairs, out of bound 3rd floor, Hagrid's Hut, Forbidden Forest and even Dumbledore's Office. See the difference!
The characters in this film are not developed well, except for Protagonists and Friends Agatha and Sophie. Why does Sophie want to become a princess? Because of her late mother! The motivation does not have sufficient background, at least in this film. The heroine duo, instead of being surprised on finding the school, accept it's existence as a matter of fact just because the book store owner told them so! One could see the plot twist at the end coming from a distance.
The central mystery of this film also disappoints. Friendship between the two protagonists is shoved down our throat like we have to accept it.
Honestly and in conclusion, the story and concept is good, the acting is okay and direction is okay. The thing which lets us down is the screenplay, the way a story is transformed to movie scenes.
Kantara (2022)
A tough film to create with such perfection
The film has no dull scene. But barring the beginning and the end, there are no memorable scenes either. The ending, however, is so good that it more than compensates for the lack of excitement in the middle part of the film.
Film starts like a mythology , takes a turn to become a slice of life film showing typical village life in Karnataka and ends as a horror film which feels more spiritual actually in last 10 minutes.
The characters are grounded in reality. I have not seen such perfectly cast non glamorous cast in any film till date. Only unrealistic thing is the hero beating multiple villain's henchmen easily enough.
The film also raises important but opposing social issues like tribal rights and conservation of Nature without being preachy. The film uses a fake villain right until almost the end and the original villain character turns positive towards the end.
The ending is the best one I have ever seen. Even if I do not see the whole film again, I can see the ending a dozen, or may be two dozen times.
The film may seem simple, but it is very difficult to blend so many different genres in a single film like this. The director and writing team deserves accolades.
Recommended.
20segi sonyeo (2022)
Good ROMCOM with no shortcomings
I watched this movie on Netflix.
A good thing about 20th Century Girl is its pacing. There is no boring moment in the entire movie.
The story is a little bit similar to Indian Film, 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge', or any movie where love is a result of mistaken identity or miscommunication. However, a bittersweet twist is introduced at the end of the film which may attract contrary but equally strong opinions from viewer based on type of endings they like. Such endings are common in K dramas though.
The protagonist is really, really attractive looking. In fact, I started watching her K Drama 'Backstreet Rookie' because of her only.
All the characters have their witty scenes where they bring smile to your face, be it Titular Character's romantic and emotional best friend, her caring and love interest and love interest's sarcasting best friend, love interest's little brother, protagonist's typical classmates, strict and eccentric teacher, cool father, annoying mother, irritating little brother and even the blink and miss school doctor character or the blind date introduced near the end of movie.
The romance in the movie is subtle and natural, does not feel forced at all. This may be a simple but rare feature in any movie.
Despite all the good things as above, my only grouse is that the movie does not show you any extraordinary or iconic scene.
In conclusion, this is a two times or may be three times watch and can be recommended to your friends with you joining them.
