The Devil's Advocate (1997)

Devil Movies!

A friend of mine and I just watched the Harbinger and we thought it was really original and entertaining but then someone said you have to watch the prophecy, Constantine and the devils advocate.

We have now watched all 4 movies. All great, all slightly different in their own way, but the devils advocate is the best out of the four.

First of all, it has the best production value, Keanu Reeves has a couple of off moments in his acting but for the most part he's pretty good, Al Pacino and Charlize are great with an engaging story.

All 4 movies are great because they have one thing in common - Most Devil movies don't have much original to offer. The Harbinger and The Prophecy even have a Native American element to them that we both loved. I recommend the Harbinger as a good low budget Devil movie, but it's original, I give it a 7. I give the prophecy and Constantine an 8 because they have higher production value and that matters, and I give the devil's advocate a 9. Thumbs up and all fun devil movies!

Fun film!

Funny enough watching another really original film brought me here. I was telling someone about it and they said oh you have to watch Constantine, The prophecy, and Devil's Advocate.

Loved The Harbinger and now love all Four of these! This movie has a great ambience and darkness without being a pure jump scare movie. I love the overall mood.

I've seen enough devil movies to know that a lot of them are not very original but these 4 are.

Won't give spoilers, but love the endings to all of them. The Harbinger and The Prophecy have a native American element which I thought was cool, but these two Constantine and Devil's Advocate still have master storytelling and a much higher production value than The Harbinger. Devils Advocate is slightly ahead of Constantine for me. But Thumbs up on Constantine and fun watch!

Love the Native American element

I just watched the Harbinger, which has its own unique mythological storytelling in its own right, and was discussing how I've never seen a native American element employed in a Devil movie before. And they said watch the prophecy.

Both movies are great, but this one obviously has a much higher budget. I love Christopher Walken and Viggo Mortensen.

I thought the concept of the war between the Angels and trying to gain a soul was interesting. I can see in both movies how if you don't have the great acting the overall concept could go south real quick.

With guys like Walken and Mortensen the acting definitely brings the entire movie up. Fun watch!

The genres listed for those 3 movies are fantasy, mystery, drama, supernatural, thriller, psychological thriller, adventure, action, cult film, and horror. The Harbinger has all of those elements. I would say the first half has more of the intrigue, fantasy, mystery, drama, supernatural aspects. The second half has the same, but adds some thriller, adventure, and even a little action on top. There is a light (very light) layer of horror combined with a creepy ominous mood laid within the whole movie. There is even some off-brand light humor that will depend on your taste. Some of the humor relates to who some characters are and you learn why.

This is obviously not a movie intending to go for jump scares, but rather intrigue, spook, & entertain with a unique mythology, colorful characters, & plot twists.

While not faith-based, it is free of any graphic detail, and although PG-13, 98% is really more PG.

Considering this is a low budget independent, it's admirable they swung for the fences against those Hollywood films. Since I rated those other two movies an 8 and Devil's Advocate a 9, I'm giving The Harbinger a solid 7. With a higher budget it would have been equal with the two 8s.
