Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
The perfect summer popcorn movie
I don't think we should expect Shakespeare from a film like this. That was never the goal of the film. The goal was to create a fun, enjoyable summer film in which rules and realism are practically absent. And in my opinion the objective was successfully achieved.
There are flaws: the first part tends to take itself a little too seriously, and the CGI is horrible for 3 quarters of the film (but since I expected it it didn't bother me that much). But in a film of this type these are minor errors, what matters is that it is a damn entertaining film, full of action and breathtaking moments, with an absolutely badass Jason Statham in everything he does and a Fast & Furious-style Family which I ended up loving.
And honestly I feel highly satisfied. Sometimes you really need films like these. As I specified in the title, popcorn movies that turn off the brain and completely ignore realism to make room for fun.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
This is heaven for a Nintendo fan like me
I honestly don't know for sure how I should review this movie, whether as a Super Mario fan or a detached viewer. But since I'm a fan of Super Mario and Nintendo in general, I can say that this movie was a godsend.
This movie was hilarious and very enjoyable from start to finish, there was not a single dull moment and I had a lot of fun taking in the myriad of references to the various Super Mario games contained in this film. I was watching the movie with a friend, who is also a Super Mario enthusiast, and it was a constant treasure hunt.
From an animation standpoint, I think we can all agree that it's the best thing Illumination has ever produced. The colors are bright and lively, the action scenes are imaginative and fun as hell, and the animation in general is sublime.
A point in favor was also the characterization of the characters. Given the low amount of dialogue in the Super Mario games, I really enjoyed seeing all those characters interact in a new and fun way. Honestly, I would instantly buy a game with these animations and especially with these dialogues and this humor. Still speaking of characterizations, I can only praise the work done with Peach: I loved seeing her in the role of a bold and warrior queen, and I hope that Nintendo will give her this characterization in one of their games as well.
In my opinion, the only real flaw of this movie is its pace: the plot is very simple (and there's nothing wrong with it, I didn't pretend to see Shakespeare in a Super Mario movie), but the various events follow each other without a breather. As soon as a sequence ends, the movie immediately moves on to the next one without a break. And while a wild pace like this is very entertaining, I wish they had taken a few more minutes to slow down a bit and delve into the characters, or even just to give the viewers a breather.
In conclusion, this movie is, for what it has to be, pretty great. It entertains very well, it never gets boring, it has wonderful animations and a humor that is childish but never too much. Also, for all Nintendo and Super Mario fans who have been waiting for this film since 2018/2019, it will be something crazy. As I said the characterization of the characters is not explored that much, and I think that in Pixar's hands the movie would have benefited from that point of view, but the child in me didn't give a damn about all this and had fun like never before.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
A damn entertaining movie
After reading many reviews of this movie, mostly negative, I expected much worse. And instead, despite its obvious flaws, it turned out to be a truly enjoyable and entertaining movie, pleasant to follow and never boring.
But let's go in order, as I said there are some flaws: I didn't perceive Jonathan Majors' Kang as a great threat, as the film instead would like to pass off. Which isn't a good thing, considering he'll be the main villain of Phase 5. The CGI, while not deeming it as awful as many have described it, is up and down, has truly impressive moments and "meh" moments. Modok is perhaps the only element with truly terrible CGI. In addition, I found some of the dialogues quite senseless, and sometimes almost ridiculous.
But apart from all these evident flaws, I had a lot of fun watching this movie, and in my opinion it totally achieved its goal. The main purpose of a cinecomic is to entertain the viewer, and as a viewer I felt entertained throughout. So I don't feel like complaining so much. I conclude by saying that I completely understand who didn't like this film, but I liked it, I'm sorry.
Black Adam (2022)
Not a masterpiece at all, but it entertains very well
I'm so sorry that the film was a flop, economically speaking: despite obvious flaws, Black Adam managed to entertain me making me spend two hours having fun. In addition, the presence of The Rock morally forces me to go to the cinema.
As I said this movie is not without flaws: slow motion is abused in some parts, there are slight pacing problems and the post-credit scene with Superman, thanks to the reorganization of James Gunn and the abandonment of Henry Cavill, has now lost any meaning.
However, I repeat what I said at the beginning: Black Adam entertains, between very good action scenes and the charismatic presence of The Rock, and if you don't have too many pretensions you will enjoy it as I did.
The Gentlemen (2019)
After two huge disappointments, Guy Ritchie made a movie I loved
After seeing the trailer for The Gentlemen I was on the defensive about it, as it's a Guy Ritchie movie. As I specified in the title, I have seen two Ritchie movies before this one, and I didn't like them both at all: Wrath of Man, which I found really boring and slow, and above all King Arthur, which I consider one of the worst films I have ever seen. So I can say that I had my good reasons not to be totally convinced. But honestly I think I got the wrong movie, because I really loved The Gentlemen.
It's a wonderfully structured movie, with a splendid narration and above all fantastic characters (I particularly liked the one of Charlie Hunnam, and here, unlike King Arthur, he shows more than one facial expression). I loved it from start to finish, and when I finished it I swear I even gave a round of applause towards the screen...but in some ways this thing made me nervous.
Seeing that Guy Ritchie is capable of making such great movies, it made me angry to see that he also made the two aforementioned movies (and which, as I said, I didn't like at all). But I'm happy that now I know what he's capable of. Good job, Ritchie. I can say I "made peace" with you.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
When I don't know what to watch, I choose this movie
I knew I loved this movie even before I saw it: first of all I knew that I would have enjoyed some Fast & Furious style action; plus I've always wanted a spin-off with Hobbs and Shaw, and the last thing (most importantly) it would have been directed by David Leitch, one of my favorite directors when it comes to action scenes.
Reiterating what I said in the title, this movie is one of the most entertaining and rewatchable movies I've ever seen: when I don't know what to watch, I know to play it safe by choosing it. The chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is fantastic, the action scenes are spectacular and flawlessly directed (we're talking about David Leitch after all) and the villain played by Idris Elba is effective.
But what I like most about this movie is its self-awareness: unlike the main chapters of Fast & Furious (very fun and exaggerated but always with a serious subtext) Hobbs & Shaw does not pretend to be taken seriously, and knows perfectly what it is. In conclusion, if you want to have a laugh and enjoy some great, flawlessly shot action, Hobbs & Shaw is the perfect choice.
Ambulance (2022)
High-octane Bayhem high-budget blockbuster action at its peak
I was honestly shocked at the amount of bad reviews this movie got here, since it's the only Michael Bay movie which got positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (more than 60%). And I actually still don't understand them. Ok, it's a Michael Bay movie, so I obviously expected a lot of negative reviews, but not so many, because I think this movie deserves some praise.
This movie is a Bayhem grenade ready to explode as soon as you start it. The plot is basic (I think we can all agree on the fact that the plot isn't the main point of Michael Bay's movies) but when the movie gets into the action he never takes his foot off the accelerator, with a fast pace and some truly spectacular and dynamic action scenes. The keyword of Ambulance is "adrenaline", and it works perfectly. Plus, I cant help but mention Jake Gyllenhall's incredible performance. If you want nonstop action, this movie is the perfect choice.
The Artist (2011)
A mute movie has made me cry...I don't have to say anything else
I admit that I decided to see this movie for the choice of the Academy to award it with the Best Picture Oscar, and I was curious to see if a mute movie was really worth it. Result? It definitely was worth it.
Although in the first minutes the absence of dialogues slightly disoriented me, as the minutes went by I felt more and more intrigued by the events of the two protagonists. All was helped by an exceptional soundtrack, a very elegant black and white and a beautiful interpretation by Jean Dujardin.
I've heard some people complain about the choice to award this movie with the Best Picture Award, but I was so impressed and surprised that I can't complain about the Academy's choice.
Winchester (2018)
If you're searching for a good horror with memorable characters...keep searching
Despite a Razzie nomination for worst picture I didn't want to start biased with this film, also because the true story of the Winchester house is one of the most interesting out there. But I was quite disappointed with it.
The characters are not interesting, none of them, and not even a very good actress like Helen Mirren has managed to resolve the situation. There are some slightly good horror moments, but the whole thing is handled in such a stretched time frame that you end up falling asleep, which shouldn't happen for a horror. And the worst thing, it almost made me angry that they wasted such an interesting story as that of Winchester House on such a lackluster film. And I'm sorry to say it, because in my opinion the potential was there.
The Gray Man (2022)
A thrilling action movie that doesn't care to be original, but just entertains a lot
I saw a lot of people complaining about the basic plot and that there was nothing original in this movie. But in my opinion, as I wrote in the title, The Gray Man simply doesn't care to be original. It's not a pretentious movie, it doesn't pretend to be taken seriously. Its only goal it's to make us turn off the brain by making us enjoy some good high budget blockbuster action. In fact I've had a lot of fun watching this movie thanks to the spectacular action scenes and the various actors (in particular, I loved Chris Evans' Lloyd Hansen, one of the most charismatic and over the top villains I've ever seen). Honestly there is sufficient material for a sequel or even a trilogy, and I couldn't be happier.
Aquaman (2018)
One of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen
Reading the other reviews I was able to see how this film was not received in the best way, but honestly I don't care, I loved this movie.
First of all, the CGI is visually impressive: the colors in this movie are gorgeous, and Atlantis in particular is fabulous to see; secondly, the action was top notch and the various fights were damn good.
I have to say this movie really surprised me: even though I got excited from the trailer, I was still on the defensive as it was a DC movie, and after 4 huge disappointments from the DC Extended Universe (Batman vs Superman, Suicide Squad, Justice League and above all Man of Steel, which I consider one of the worst movies I've ever seen) I had my reasons not to be fully convinced, but this movie has surprised me, has intrigued me and has entertained me. So I don't care about what the others have said, I really liked Aquaman!
6 Underground (2019)
Some useless and boring backstory moments, but Michael bay is Michael Bay
I start by saying that in this speech I am and always will be biased, since I love Michael Bay's style. His movies, as far as I'm concerned, are some of the most fun and dynamic I've ever seen, and as an action movies lover I'll never thank him enough.
The first 20 minutes are just the perfect representation of "Bayhem": a spectacular car chase with lots and lots of shootings, explosions and silly humor. I'm not ashamed to call this chase one of the best action scenes ever made. After that the rhythm slows down a bit, with some unnecessary and quite boring backstory segments, but when when the movie starts pressing the accelerator again, it never stops, becoming more and more adrenaline-pumping and fun. It isn't a perfect movie at all, but if you want to have fun with some good old Bayhem action, this is the movie for you.
Death Wish (2018)
Some good action here and there, but nothing special
With this movie I've had the same problem many people had with the trailer of Drive. The trailer is 2 minutes of Bruce Willis shooting anything that breathes, but the problem is that the 2 minutes of action are the 2 total minutes of action in the movie. The rest is a mix of a family drama and a DCEU-style forced cupidity.
Going into detail, I really liked the torture scene with the car and the brake oil, on the other hand I didn't like the interpretation of Bruce Willis and the slowness of many parts of the film. In conclusion, actually the little action present in the film is effective and entertaining, but in fact there is little action.
Drive (2011)
A really good drama, but too slow to fully enjoy it and with a misleading trailer
The way I learned about this film is quite strange: a video about trailers which are completely different from the films they advertise, and this was the absolutely worst case; in fact the guy who did this video explained the trailer of this movie was 3 minutes of Ryan Gosling killing everyone in a cool way. And I'm a person who gets easily influenced by trailers. Therefore I decided not to watch the trailer, to avoid expecting something different, and I watched the movie without knowing anything. The 3 minutes of Gosling beating the hell out of everyone in the trailer are actually the 3 total minutes of Gosling beating everyone condensed, and in reality the first part of this movie is really slow, so I couldn't get fully involved, but I still think it was a really good drama with some really interesting parts.
Bullet Train (2022)
My favorite director is back, and with one hell of a movie!
In short, one of the best films of 2022, and for a lot of reasons. First of all, Brad Pitt was absolutely divine: Ladybug was the perfect character for him, and every single scene with him was fantastic (one of my hidden dreams is to see a saga with Ladybug as the main character). Secondly, the plot is one of the most interesting and well written of recent years: a lot of people said that the plot was very simple and was only an excuse to stage the action of the movie, but in my opinion the plot was very intriguing and engaging, and every character is useful and has his own story and his own purposes. And last but not least, the superb direction of David Leitch and the amazing action. Every time a David Leitch movie comes out, I know I'll see some of the best action scenes ever. Since there aren't many shootings, there is more space for fighting, and every fight is fun and creative. I can't say enough about one of the best movies of this year and one of the best action movies of recent years.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Fantastic! The best Tarantino movie in my opinion
I expected a very good movie but not such an excellent movie. The setting is gorgeous, the characters are great and well written and the wonderful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone completes everything. A truly fantastic film that was able to involve me from start to finish despite its long duration, and in my opinion one of the best movies of Quentin Tarantino (surely his best film from his last quatern of movies). Although I found Morricone's victory at the Oscars for best soundtrack quite right, I find it strange that this film was not even nominated for best film, because I would have included it without a doubt.
