Mayfair Witches (2023)
Pretty solid pilot
I have not read the books. I went into this because I like supernatural shows. I obsessively enjoyed IWTV and this is in the same universe so wanted to give it a try. The two shows are very different! First of all, the atmosphere is very eerie and creepy (which I don't mind at all!). Much more horror influenced, kind of in the vein of AHS Coven but not all the way horror like AHS + hints of mystery. The overall tone is dark and moody. The pace of the episode is very slow, but I've heard from others that the books are also very slow paced. I don't mind slow paced shows so don't have a problem with that. The acting was pretty solid. None of the characters really stood out to me in a compelling way though. It's a show I still will continue to watch just because I like the spooky genre and I enjoy the visual aspects of it a lot. I think it's a decent start!
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
Spectacular retelling of a classic
The show is impeccable. The dialogue, the acting, the sets. There are so many little details and parallels thrown in you really do have to re-watch it to get everything. The level of intricacy in this series is beautiful. A lot of the writers on the show are playwrights and you can definitely see the influence in the poetic lines and the way certain scenes are shot. It deserves a far higher rating. I don't understand how some people are giving this a 1 star just because it's different from the books. And how do you fairly judge something if you only watch the first 20 minutes of a 110 minute pilot episode? That's just being petty. Grow up. This is a visual medium, a TV show and it should be rated on ALL facets including acting, writing, production, sets, costumes, not solely on how "accurate" it is to the source. Despite the changes, they still manage to maintain the central themes and plots of the first book. All the major plots from the book so far (season 1 is only half of first book) are there, it's just the way to getting there are changed in some ways. This is a retelling, an adaptation. It should be able to stand on it's own feet, not be and exact translation. You already have a close version in the movie, so why would you want the same thing in TV version? I'm so glad majority of the viewers agree this is a good show. I can't wait for the next season and can't wait to see what the writers come up with.
