Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005)
Took me back to that time/that war/that courage.
As one who remembers the events of the late thirties and the forties, I was, of course, moved by the depth and strength of the British people in the face of what could well have been the end of Britain and their way of life. When Maureen raised her hand with the V for victory sign as bombs were falling she, in that one movement, symbolized the unity of her country, their faith that they would prevail. I am surprised that Will has been in so many TV appearances and so few movies thus far. He is a fine singer, but also a good actor. Did Dench and Hoskins make a perfect "couple" or what! Judi Dench can make any movie worth seeing; she certainly did this one.
Shiza (2004)
So few words, such beauty, such strength
Schizophrenic Mustafa (Schizo) is not. His classmates have given him that nickname because they think he is crazy. And a doctor is treating him with pills. There's nothing crazy about him. He's not even as slow as he is made out to be. He is non-verbal, yes. But those eyes see it all. He lives in a country where men have no jobs, the land has no produce, a desolate place. He lives with an uncle who involves him in recruiting men to fight bare-knuckled, even to the death, in an illegal boxing racket. He is taken in by a young widow who starts as his substitute mother. But they learn to love each other and come to an intimacy that is presented to us beautifully. We don't even think of incest. Fine acting. We get to know them so well. Great direction and camera work. Put it on your list of ones to see.
Ya lyublyu tebya (2004)
Premise not new. This presentation outstanding.
The premise of three people trying to figure out who loves whom, get past jealousy, open to the possibility of love not limited and find joy and fulfillment in sharing their love and making a good life together is not a new one. But in "You I Love" the familiar story is engaging, the humor fun. Even the anger parts and the resolution of those is believable. I never found myself thinking "Right. Spare me!" I never found myself wishing it had come out another way. I don't know the correct word for the way the camera flashed about in between-scenes clips, but it was done so well I enjoyed it, was never distracted by it. Titles were quite readable and in perfectly good English. They moved at a good pace for me. I have already recommended this film to many friends who I know will come out of it thanking me for telling them about it.
