Luca (2021)
It started out so strong!
I started watching this movie and began falling in love with the world and the characters, it was masterfully animated and the voice actors were great. Then, NOTHING. This movie starts out giving you a sense that there will be adventures and stakes, but as it progresses towards the main plot (slight SPOILERS ahead), it doesn't really go anywhere. It's nice to see Luca wanting to know more about the human world and his friend Albert bonding with Massimo, it's all very sweet. But Luca doesn't really learn much of any depth and Alberto and Massimo's bond remains quite surface level. The movie revolving around a race seems okay at first, but I would have expected something with greater stakes occurring at some point. I have seen much more character development and world exploration done so well in other kids/family movies, so I don't believe this is the reason for the limited depth to this movie. The overall message is nice, but it feels like quite a hollow victory.
True Lies (2023)
The title is click bait for True Lies fans.
If you enjoyed James Cameron's True Lies movie with Arnie, this is not the show for you. This is NOTHING like the movie and should have been given a different name, it's pretty much a click bait title. The story is bland, you don't feel anything for any of the characters. The movie had a serious tone and plot with some humour peppered throughout, whereas this show seems to be going for dramody, but wait for it, ADD SPIES. I gave this show more of a go than it deserved as I love the movie and was wondering if there would be ANYTHING to resemble it, nope. Do not waste your time, it would save you time if I were to provide spoilers, but there is a plot to spoil. I can't imagine this show lasting beyond 1 season, I am shocked it even got past the pilot episode.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I enjoyed it, but the plot could be better
I loved the effects, acting and the concept for this movie. However, when you see a movie that introduces you to a new concept, the beginning of the movie is discovering the concept, and the end is putting that into play with the main plot. For this movie, it feels a bit like it never gets out of the concept stage, then when it finally starts making progress on a plot, I wasn't particularly invested in it. I enjoyed the characters, all are wonderfully created and portrayed by the cast, but there could have been more done with the story. I recommend watching this, the jokes, the effects, the talent and the concept are all spectacular, but don't expect much in the plot. I finished this movie wanting more, but not a longer movie, just one with a better version of the plot, I am okay with a simple plot, but this plot was uninteresting and I didn't feel like very much had happened after all that work throughout the movie.
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (2019)
Fire the marketing team
The marketing for this was appalling, and I feel so bad for the people who made this movie, they should be proud of it, yet it tanked due to the fatphobic marketing. I really enjoyed it and the marketing was so off base that it actually portrayed the opposite message of what the movie was actually about. The animation was great, the characters were decent, the soundtrack was okay, and the story was simple, but decent. I hope people will give this movie a go, I am sure that most will enjoy it, and very few will be offended by it, I thought it had a lovely message without feeling contrived and/or preachy.
