Garbo Talks (1984)
The sweet power of hero worship
Anne Bancroft, in the film Garbo Talks, experiences what many film fans can only dream of, meeting their idol. As Estelle Rolfe fades, we see her son Gilbert grow, helped along by his quest to find the mysterious Greta Garbo before his mother dies.
This film, while not great, is a great film if you are a Garbo fan. Listening to Estelle tell Garbo of all the big moments of her life and how each were punctuated by one of Garbo's films, is a testament to the power film can have.
Leave Yesterday Behind (1978)
A Must-See for Any Carrie Fisher Fan
This television film, which I first saw way back in 1978, was what really hooked me as a Carrie Fisher fan. It was also the first film of hers I had seen after "Star Wars" and it was a pleasant change of pace from that film. The chemistry between Carrie Fisher and John Ritter, best known for his comedic role on "Three's Company," elevate this film beyond the standard "movie of the week." There's humor in the film, as well as romance, and it offers viewers a chance to see both leads in roles they weren't famous for.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Worthy Opening to a Space Epic!
Having grown up a Star Wars fan, I waited with baited breath to see "The Phantom Menace." After seeing the film multiple times, both in the theater and the DVD, I am still in awe of Lucas' masterful story line. This movie is the first chapter of the Star Wars Saga and it is a fitting beginning. The plot twists, alliances are formed and schemes unfold in a simple trade dispute. This film, perceived as boring by some, is nothing of the sort. There is action, political intrigue, great characterization, and humor. Highly recommended.
