Civil War (2024)
Original, interesting civil war movie
"Civil War" is completely different compared to other dystopian films about wars and conflicts. The story revolves around a professional war photographer who adopts a wannabe photographer-journalist as her protégée, struggling with ups and downs throughout the film.
The realistic cinematography focuses on the digital and analogue photo shots taken by the main characters, who accompany special military missions. After watching this film, I, as an amateur photographer, begin to consider risking my life as a war photographer.
The film features intense, morbid scenes of everything one can expect in a war situation. The excellently crafted story is well put together, with occasional room for appropriate humor. Besides, there is a lot of focus on the small group of main characters, causing the theme of the American civil war between the state and separatist groups to fade into the background. As a viewer, I would have liked to learn more about this.
Overall, "Civil War" is an original, shocking, and intriguing film that is a must-watch, preferably in theaters!
The Holdovers (2023)
Engaging. Funny. Christmassy.
The Holdovers (2023), 8,0 IMDb score, takes you back to the Christmas break of the 70-71 college year at Barton Boys Boarding School. Paul Giamatti shines in a brilliant leading role as a neurotic, reluctant teacher who evolves into a loving father figure. His character delivers the perfect blend of dry, humorous quirks, where a serious teacher sometimes speaks without filter. Although watched at the beginning of spring, the film immediately evokes a longing for the holidays. It's a Christmas movie where Christmas seems to fade into the background, yet the Christmas spirit strongly resonates throughout the storyline. The stunning visuals really transport you back to 1970-1971, making the time and atmosphere feel realistically vivid. The storyline is touching, with an emotional climax that leaves you deeply moved as the film reaches its conclusion. With five Oscar nominations and Da'Vine Joy Randolph walking away with the award for Best Supporting Actress, "The Holdovers" proves itself as a captivating and enchanting picture!
