Sell Out! (2008)
Good effort, good laughs and good music
This show mainly focuses on the two main casts Eric Tan (acted by Peter Davis) and Rafflesia Pong (Jerrica Lai). Both of them faces work related struggles where Eric designed a soya-bean machine which is not par with what his 2 bosses (making a humorous comedic pair) played by the want and Rafflesia who's TV series is facing a possible cut after low ratings. Both of these casts were tied in together wonderfully in script with laughs along the way.
The humor is one of a kind with some sarcasm and inside jokes inserted here and there. I like how the director Yeo Joon Han could make fun of himself too in the movie (As has been done by several directors in the past including Matt Groening in this cartoon series the Simpsons).
I believe Rafflesia's role was played out to the best of her capabilities by Jerrica Lai while Peter Davis' acting could further be improved by instilling more expressions in his face and enthusiasm. What I liked about this show was the true concept that lied beneath the outer layer such as how movies need not have lots of actions scenes just to attract audiences and how good people are expected to look just to be on TV these days. This depicts a proper story line that makes sense unlike the many Tinseltown Hollywood mumbo jumbo films have made. I also thoroughly admired the effort put into the writing of the songs in scenes of the show. The lyrics made sense and I found some songs to be rather catchy.
To sum it all up, there were many bits in this show which I enjoyed. If you want to know more about the movie for yourself, hop in to the cinema and experience a different kind of movie with humor and moral!
Revolutionary Road (2008)
An eye-opening road
Let me start by complimenting Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet on their brilliant performance in this movie. In my opinion, Leonardo deserves a commanding nomination for some awards too following his role in this film. They made their roles come alive which made their stories very believable. Michael Shannon who played John Givings in the movie did a good job too.
This movie shows a couple (the Wheelers) that decides to do something which most of us know is an option we commonly ignore at the back of our mind. They opt to escape from the constant predicament of what everyday life has to offer- the jobs, the people we associate with, the house, the surroundings. So, almost all of us can easily relate to this story as having thought about how constant life can get at one point or another.
The movie shows us how Frank (Leo DiCaprio) and April (Kate Winslet) deals with the ups-and-downs of what life throws at them. All these prove to challenge their relationship even more so. This is what ultimate reality is where love is being tested whether it could stand the test of time.
I rated this movie a 9.0 for the brilliant acting by the two main characters and also for the true significance of this film.
The Happening (2008)
Anything BUT happening.
This movie has to be one of the must not-see films in my list. It lacks content and does not add up at all.
The movie tells about the lives of Elliot Moore(played by Mark Wahlberg) and Alma Moore (played by Zooey Deschanel) which is about to be affected immensely by a deadly virus that rampantly spreads. The beginning of the film was interesting as they try to figure out the cause of the problem but once the cause has been found, it does not make sense and the story just crumbles from thereon.
As an increasing number of people get affected by this very unlikely phenomenon, it is unclear how victims are being targeted or spared. It's as if there's a random selection process that the author/ director conveniently left out. Lots of things in this film is unexplained which leaves viewers with many 'hows' and 'whys'. After having watched this film, my friends and I pondered about a million and one things in it.
This show has several plot holes and does not tie in together to make this a film worth-watching.
Stay away from this film, readers. You have been warned.
Marley & Me (2008)
This movie's mainly for dog-lovers
Call me harsh but this movie really centers around the dog so much so that I find it suited mostly for all the dog-lovers out there- especially those who own pets. Reasons being you can relate better to your pet and your experience with it.
I expected there would be lots of dog scenes especially from the title of the movie but I just did not enjoy them much at all. Mind you, my opinion could be a little biased as I do not/ have never owned a dog before.
I must admit I enjoyed bits of it here and there. Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson played their roles to the best of their abilities as they really displayed clear affection towards Marley. However, I still find myself rolling my eyes over several slightly cliché~ or expected scenes.
Towards the end, I couldn't wait for this movie to be over because it seemed to be dragging on for a while.
So for all you dog lovers out there, this movie would be enjoyable. It's a family fun movie. but those out there who are not big on animals, this is not your sort of film. 120 minutes of film revolving around the center character of a dog was just not my cup of tea.
City of Ember (2008)
A story lacking ember
Have you ever been to a movie that leaves you comment-less? This is one of those movies. It's just hard to explain what the impact of this movie.
Firstly, I liked the colour of the city and the beginning part of the story. However, as the centre storyline begins to unfold, this movie failed to execute and in my opinion, it crashed and burned.
The mole in the show was very annoying and looked rather fake. It appeared part-human and part-plant like. To be quite honest, it looked rather silly.
I was left rather disappointed with the ending too... they should have showed more about what life on earth has then become. Looking back now, I can't remember much about this show at all. just bits and pieces but the most of it I have already forgotten as that's simply what this show is about. forgettable because the characters failed to attract my attention whatsoever. The characters lacked life and hence, they failed to make this movie come alive. I believe this show could have so much more potential than what it turned out to be.
From the above, this explains why I gave this movie a 5.0 for being right-on-the-dot average.
Conclusion from show: if you ever want to leave something for future generations to read, write it as simple as possible and leave many copies of it around.
House (2008)
2 thumbs down for me
I thought this show was pretty bad. It lacked a lot of context and the show did not link. I understand that it's a book but I would've preferred it if they were placed in the house because there was something they shared in common- like if they had sinned. I understand the one couple being picked to enter the house as they have each killed someone. However, the main starring actor and actress did not kill their daughter intentionally.
Also, I thought the girl at the end reminded me too much like Samara from the movie The Ring with her long black hair and grey clothes. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a well somewhere in the movie with her crawling out of it and out of televisions. In fact, that might even have sparked more interest in the show than what it had done.
To me, it was merging ideas from Saw series, The Ring and Texas chainsaw massacre.. the whole Tinman idea came out so abruptly at the start when they were just fearing about the hotel. It was so far fetched and out of the blue that there was no lead to it at all. The little girl in grey being killed at the end made me laugh to myself in the cinema. Why? because it was as if she was pulling some of those well-known matrix stunts as she was falling to the ground (yes, I think we can add matrix into the list of the shows I mentioned before).
Right at the end, it was quite unrealistic how the couple killed each other when Susan was clearly telling them they didn't have to kill anyone. A wee bit over-the-top. It was quite unnecessary to have Susan peeking out the woods to smile right at the end too.
The show could have had so much more potential to attract the audience but it failed to do so- leaving only the typical and quite predictable scenes in the movie.
All in all, it was a clear waste of my time as I was expecting a lot more from this movie. So, do avoid this show and watch something more worthwhile~
Nights in Rodanthe (2008)
Romantic, sweet old love story
I think this show was right on the money for me. I watched it over the plane but there were parts in the movie that made me control myself from tearing all over the place.
The chemistry between Richard gere and Diane lane was very believable (fantastic acting on both parts)! I loved how Diane lane's daughter acted in the show too. She displayed maturity and how she transformed throughout the show was easy to believe as what a teenager could possibly be like in real life.
I loved this show from start to end. Definitely recommended for the romantic people out there!
The Simpsons Movie (2007)
thumbs up,up and UP!
Being a loyal Simpson fan for many years and having watched almost all of their episodes, I really didn't know what to expect when entering the cinema of this show. The color and graphics of the show was really amazing, makes you happy whilst watching the show.It stayed true to the comedy of Simpson - and as always, expect a lot of randomness like in the normal Simpson series. There's a lot of effort invested into making every line in this show and all the main characters appear in the movie - which was very nice... except you may notice an absence of the actor with arnold schwarz's voice seen in regular episodes hahaha (for reasons you will find out when watching the movie).
Hope all you Simpson fans out there will love it as much as I did!
