Le bleu du caftan (2022)
the perfect blend of Morocco's culture heritage and queer cinema theme
2023 NYC Film Forum
Overall, this movie achieves a perfect blend of Morocco's cultural heritage and themes of queer cinema, creating a unique and compelling viewing experience. It has a very slow pace but delicately expresses a lot of things. When watching it, I didn't think it was a very typical queer cinema movie. Its title expresses the exquisite and flavorful traditional craftsmanship, and I even sense a kind of loss for the gradual dying process of this particular Moroccan cultural asset
In terms of the emotional story of the two protagonists, I personally think it is a bit too well-organized, to the point where the final threesome seems overly perfect.
However, I really like the director's music and the scenes of the male lead passing through the long tunnel to the public bath, which I feel is a metaphor for his transformation to his true identity. His wife is more like a mother giving him a home, while the young apprentice is his lover. There are many symbolic elements in the movie, and my favorite is the segment about the oranges, which implies a lot of unspeakable lust. Also, I really like main actors' performance, and would give it a four-star recommendation with a rating of 8/10.
