Robinson Crusoe (1997)
Fails to be a movie
The best fact to summarize this experience:
The main story about Robinson Crusoe is one big flashback and it has no meaning for the present time in the movie because there is no plot except some guy reading Robinson's journal.
That's like real life: This movie provides absolutely no added value.
My biggest issue with Robinson Crusoe was the pacing - During one hour and 27 minutes (watched it on sky) this movies fails to build any connections to the characters. There is no place for emotions lasting longer than 10 seconds because the movie cuts to the next scene showing Robinson running randomly over the island.
So you could say the characters are not allowed to breathe - to show their mood and to act understandably.
For comparison: I watched "Cast Away" a few days ago. You can feel the main character's fight for survival and his despair. Finding food and building a shelter is presented as a difficult . To overcome this challenge the protagonist has to work with the nature, to grow as character.
In contrast, Robinson Crusoe lands on the island seeming a little bit sad. Next you see him inside a fortress he has supposedly built all by himself without attending his journey of adapting to nature and surmount the despair of stranding on an island.
Instead of showing , Robinson Crusoe is telling us from time to time what he is feeling and thinking. It mostly seems to me that the writers did just copy the book (I did not read it) failing to use the visual aspects of movies.
And that is why I cannot rate this "movie" with more than two stars. This is an insult towards cinema!
300 (2006)
A Special One
At first glance, 300 seemed to me like a Bollywood production because of the bright colors and the action shots. (for example compared to "RRR")
Soon after watching this movie, I began to appreciate this fresh style of setting, because it is creating harmony with the Spartan legacy.
Gerard Butler and all the other shredded warriors are a perfect fit for the battle sequences between Spartans and Persians. After the introduction to the characters and the plot, the movie is all about the battlefield.
Watching Spartans killing Persians represents the hole movie. Beautiful camera shots in slow motion and a lot of blood splashing on the screen are why you have to see 300.
The side plot showing the queen doing politics is a nice one, but nothing more.
In the end, nobody can describe this movie better than King Leonidas himself: "THIS IS SPARTA!"
The Equalizer (2014)
Pretty Classic
The idea behind "the equalizer " is not very original: Some ex-agent guy in retirement forced to fight an underground organization which must be of course Russian. Nethertheless, this movie is mostly fun to watch. The action scenes and mainly the perfomance of Denzel Wachington are probably the biggest arguments for recommandation.
Though, I had an issue with the general plot. After seeing many movies of this kind, following events won't surprise you and the final confrontation is scripted after the general scheme of action movies: The final battle has to take place in the Hardware store, Robert works at and in the end, his one fellow from work, the security guy, has his little moment by running half dead through "Home Art" to switch the lights on - good job by the way.
The main antagonist played by Marton Csokas is being mafia-style the hole movie. After no character is developing throughout the story, you can see that Teddy is no real threat to our hero. There is one scene describing this issue, when Bob meets his former collegues from secrete whatsoever and asks them for permission to destroy the hole mafia organization by himself. He is the perfect man from the beginning to the end and the only time he struggles is towards the end when Teddy gets a shot at him. Obviously, this does not make any difference because Bob can kill Teddy despite the fact he is wounded without any effort.
In conclusion, I wouldn't reallly recommend watching this film if you haven't done it yet, because there is few innovative content.
There are better movies like "John Wick", concentrating on one primary aspect like action sequences, that I would rather watch.
"The Equalizer" is a solid action-movie having no new ideas.
