A Man in Full (2024)
In Title Only
I was once very excited to see that a book I read some twenty years ago was going to made into a mini series, until I saw it was being produced by the one dimensional David E Kelley unfortunately the only thing that reflects the novel is the title
A Man in Full was a multi dimensional novel by the late great Thomas Wolfe , his story unlike this shlock is full of memorable characters and situations out of the ordinary.
Jeff Daniels was not right for the part of a type A megalomaniac like Charlie Croker, whose character was never developed enough for him to become the anti hero was written to be.
Once again David E Kelley gives you a broadcast TV level mini series that sets fire to a great novel and in better hands could of been a Man in Full.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
Like A Warning Track Fly Ball
At three quarters of the way through this movie I thought it was going to be a home run but suddenly the ball was caught at the warning track and this movie went from an 8 to a 5.
Love Lies Bleeding has a good story, good pacing, interesting characters with a gritty look and feel reminiscent of a 70's noir film but like many movies these days there always the problem with the ending and unlike Saint Maude the director really dropped the ball
The movie went off the rails when it abandoned realism injected Hollywood-ism and finally absurdism.to ruin one of the better noir films of recent times.
Brandy Hellville & the Cult of Fast Fashion (2024)
A Nontroversy
The tired phrase "Keep moving folks there's nothing here to see " is for once appropriate in regards to Brandy Hellville.
This farce of a documentary about teen girls obsession with the clothing brand Brandy Melville does more to promote the brand than disgrace it.
Brandy Melvile cleverly became a fashion phenomenon by marketing to teenage girls as do many others but BM didn't hide the fact that their main target was tall thin pretty white girls and shunned the other demographics. The documentary tries to make the company look nefarious but fails to make a legitimate case.
The doc briefly touches on the fact that the fast fashion industry creates mountains of waste that ends up getting shipped to 3rd world countries, this would of made for a much better documentary than the 90 minutes of thin pretty white girls complaining that they think they were exploited.... The Irony.
Poor Things (2023)
21st Century Schizoid Girl
Poor Things is now my favorite film of the 21st century, amazingly designed, filmed and acted with a wickedly macabre sense of humor, I felt they had me in mind when making this movie
Poor Things is great on so many levels that it can not be digested completely with just one viewing, I am on my 3rd. Emma Stone has become the best actress going today and I can't think of any other actress who could of pulled this off.
The set designs, cinemaphotography and dialogue put this movie so far apart from anything I have seen the last 20 years I find that I cant think of any movie comparable.
Dafoe is great as always but Ruffalo steals the show, this seems like a character he was born to play and revels in the part.
Poor Things is not for everyone which is why I know it's great, most people are not going to howl at seeing an infantile women stab a corpses eye balls with glee while saying Squish Squish Squish.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024)
A Brief Case of Stupidity
I can not believe that Ethan Coen directed this absurdly bad movie, If you would of seen my face during the watching of this film you would have concluded that I was watching Schindlers List!.
Drive Away Dolls which takes place in 1999 should of been made in 1999, then it would of came off as a more edgy ,sexy and Innovative Indy film!, Instead it's like a bad Coen brothers ripoff with lesbian sex. The peripheral characters are quirky but not funny, the dialogue is quirky but not funny and the premise is quirky and outright moronic. When I say it's a brief case of stupidity I mean it literally! This movie is like a meme that went viral a few years back " I Am Disappoint"
Fargo: Bisquik (2024)
Sew Stoooopid
Give me a break Noah Hawley how could you write a character as dumb as Wayne Lyon! The guy got zapped ! Since when does electrocution cause one to become like a 5 year old!
The last 15 minutes here were pure cringe, Hawley must be surrounded by people who tell him what a genius he is! But I have to say the writing this season proves otherwise.
The show bounces from film noir, quirky comedy ,domestic drama where all the men are either Evil, stupid, lame, drunk or dead. This season wastes a lot of time on nonsense like domestic violence puppet shows which may be the dumbest ever on tv
Not sure what the message here was supposed to be here other than girl power and white man bad but please spare us from a season 6
I am now reluctantly hopeful that Hawley will get Alien right.
After Yang (2021)
A Cure For Insomnia
This maybe the dullest film I have ever seen, some movies are labelled Action Thrillers this one can be labeled Action less snoozer.
The movie starts out on a fun note but quickly dissolves. Yang who is a robot boy also referred to as a Techno Sapien has suddenly stopped working leaving a big hole in the life of his adopted family.
The father Jake played by Colin Farrell tries to have Yang repaired but the engineers discover something about Yang that makes him unique from all the other Techno's and want to study him further.
The movie consists of long drawn out scenes with a melancholic piano score meanwhile nobody in this film talks louder than a whisper and before you know it the credits are rolling and you've had a nice nap.
Babylon (2022)
Incoherent Drivel
Damian Chazelle Hired 1000 extras for this film and to hell if he wasn't gonna use them in 50% of the movie. I have never seen such incoherent nonsense on screen before, There is no one to care about in this plotless/pointless movie glorifying old Hollywood and about the transition from silent film to talkies and how some actors didn't transition well.
Spoiler Alert
In one scene Pitt's character , silent film star Jack Conway sneaks into a movie theater to see himself.in his first talking picture just to be humiliated as the audience is rolling in laughter at his delivery of a line that may have been cringey but certainly not hilarious, so hilarious that it caused the whole entire theater full of extras to roll in the aisles with laughter.
I watched this film in 30-45 minute increments or to where I got to a point I could watch no further, like the scene where Margot gets bit in the neck by a rattle snake, one of the dumbest things I have ever seen.
