The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Draculanian Lore on the Big Screen
I was so skeptical of this, as i am usually attracted to gimmicky albeit fun horror, like Abe Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. There is nothing wrong with those, that's just what i was expecting. However, i love the deep story that comes from the book. There is certainly a set up for a second movie, and we get a glimpse a bit into the who/what/why of that plot at least a bit. I will certainly be re-studying my Draculanian lord in the next few months for a rewatch. Now the boring stuff! The acting was great, the gore was realistic, a little gratuitous, and mostly not super disturbing. The monster is so great, and I'm super impressed and pleased with the amount of detail and screen time he got.
Strays (2023)
The Actors made the film
The title says it all! Yes, the starstruck cast of voice actors did a wonderful job, but the animals who acted carried the film. In second place is the film and production people! The angles and contextual movements of the animals were so well done to make it exactly how i would imagine animals talking. I personally loved the script, and thought they hit all the marks for a rated R comedy of this kind. The movie had me and the theater laughing at so many moments, even up to the finale. I did tear up several times, but this was just sentiment as a dog owner and there is no John Wick 1 level dog trauma to be concerned of. Overall my wife and I loved the film and we will certainly be buying it!
