Dune: Part Two (2024)
Dune is empty like it's desert landscapes
It's scary that this film is rated as high as it is. Although it is true to the book it lacks substance. Most viewers will not be able to name 5 characters in the film because frankly it's impossible to get invested in them. I've seen marvel, Michael Bay, and dream works movies with more character development. The attention to religious fundamentals and economics is true to its source material but not enough to have a meaningful conversation on it. The film just like the book, has a white savior element that is just uncomfortable. Dune is essentially a white man that tries to liberate an arab-like community from their colonist overlords. None of the characters are likeable and most lack cohesive motivations but hey, zendya is in it and her eyebrows do all the acting. The celebration of this film and most films of this age is alarming. They lack depth, characters that resonate and a cohesive plot. I regretted wasting three hours watching this and I regret reading the book.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
How do you remake the best t.v. show ever written?
Although there are many issues with the remake, it is actually very impressive. This remake is darker and has new plot lines. The remake combines many of the original episodes. Some of that is done well some is done horribly. The casting is perfect, set design, music, and pacing is near perfect. The child actors do a fantastic job. This show is meant for individuals who didn't watch the original and original fans who have aged. The only major issue I have with the show is the lack of humor. I miss the potty humor and the goofy scenes that filled the original. Die hard fans of the original will have some reservations but will appreciate many different aspects of this modern masterpiece.
