Chasseurs de dragons (2008)
A wonderful animated story which breaks free from American cartooning
I voted this a 10 out of 10 simply because it is the best animated story I have been able to see in quite some time. The animation is stunning. The artwork behind each and every landscape was beautiful. From the colors to the lighting to the not standard fare of artistry. I was amazed. Moving beyond the beauty on the screen, you are immersed in a storyline that is at once timeless and at the same turn fresh. Character development is brief yet these touchstone moments are exactly what is needed to clue the viewer in to what and why and how the character has come to where they stand. I'm impressed with the entire affair and think this is a must see for the entire family.
Sex Hex (2007)
Low budget skinimax
Please don't watch this movie. You will never be able to get the 15 minutes back you lost. I say 15 minutes, because that's how long you'll make it before you turn it off. I actually thought that this was going to be an entertaining r rated movie. The premise is solid and as such, the movie had potential that was not realized. The acting was weak. These women weren't in to what they were doing or had signed up for much more than they thought. The camera angles, soft focus and horrible music furthered the difficulty in watching. The DP couldn't save this one with all the soft focus in the world. Please, next time hire an editor. My thought is that this will show up on the straight to video pron counter AFTER scenes are put back in...we'll call it SexHex v.2
Proof that lots of good looking half naked women can't carry a movie.
State Property (2002)
Today this is the new gangster movie
I watched this movie the other night on a whim. Not expecting much from what appeared to be just another 'New Jack City" type movie, I figured it would pass the time until I fell asleep. Well I am here to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Breaking away from all the classic garbage gansta movies, this one gave a look at what might actually be the way the drug world is run. With a play on character names (Bugsy) and an ending that has "say hello to my little friend!" ringing in my head, this showed violence in a way that made sense in the context it was presented and an indifference for life that we read about all too much in the newspapers every day. So while this film won't find itself up for any academy awards, it is refreshing to see a new slant on what is a state of being in to many inner city neighborhoods.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
entering the twilight zone
This movie reminds me of a better twilight zone episode. Nice plot twist with some wonderful surprises. I especially liked the pairing of Tom Cruise and Kurt Russell. This movie is well worth the cost of the rental fee.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
true fan blasphemy to follow
As the NY Times said: "...the event will have all the spontaneity and surprise of an election day in the old Soviet Union."
I had hoped for more. I had hoped that Mr. Lucas was going to redeem himself from the fiasco that was Phantom Menace and create...more. Up until this point, romance had always been living right under the visible surface of the story line. It was an important part of the plot...and what made it important was that it was always inferred. Forbidden love fighting with the bravado that only a space cowboy can create produced a wonderful sub plot. Now it's a hokey love story where the best acting is done by a green guy that is entirely computer generated.
The high points are all attached to a reference from the first trilogy and sitting in the audience, you will note this with the murmurs, giggles and such. The Abbott and Costello teaming of R2/3PO, first references of the deathstar, the world where we first meet Luke grab us.
That all being said, it's STILL a must see. Finally, Mr. Lucas at his worst (not saying that this is his worst) is still better than most at their best.
