9 Ways to Hell (2022)
Well that was just a little bit terrifying
So I found this movie while trying to find another movie, and as a hell enjoyer (helluvaboss, hazbin hotel), I thought this would be interesting. Erm, yea, it was definitely interesting, a little terrifying, and a little confusing. I could tell that there was some cohesion between each circle/story, but they weren't as intertwined as I would have hoped. Like, the first woman is facing psychological Terror because... She didn't live up to her childhood dreams? No one can do that. And don't even get me started on the snake ladies. The rings that had morals were pretty cool, but some others made no sense and it seemed like the victims were getting punished. For example, the child who murdered her family because she was possessed. Another example, the child who was manipulated by the priest into killing people and then punished. It's pretty messed up, which I guess contributes to the horror.
Big Brother (2000)
Good for a while
I first discovered this when Google recommended it to me. S25 had just started, so I watched all the way through episode 17, and then jumped around from there. It was really cool and exciting to see the underdogs rise up and the main alliance to get blindsided, but after the main "Leftovers" alliance had been formed, it was pretty boring because they comprised the majority, so whomever they wanted out got voted out. In addition, the "festie bestie" twist, while interesting on paper, wasn't as fun as expected, since there was always a person outside of the alliance in a pair that could be used as a pawn, without having to worry about putting one of their own on the block. I was, however, happy with the winner and thought it was well-deserved. Overall, I think this show is more interesting to analyze or watch a digest rather than binge.
Supai Famirî (2022)
Love the family!
I was browsing Netflix and I decided to watch this because the premise of a spy, assassin, and telepath all in one family seemed like an incredibly interesting setup. I was indeed correct, whenever the characters are solo, they are incredibly interesting, and even more so when they come together to their fake family. Having a telepathic daughter was an incredibly clever narrative method to reveal the thoughts of the characters, which would have been hard otherwise. Anya is easily the star of the show, with how much she cares about her parents and acting to comfort them and keep the mission alive. Her facial expressions are hilarious too! However, as it went on, it became increasingly clear that the primary mission was put on hold as they went off on more side quests. I stopped when Agent Nightfall tried to insert herself into the family. It just felt like unnecessary drama was created to continue the series. Like, I was fine with nothing happening and the family just doing Shenanigans, but she rubs me the wrong way. I think I'm going to take a break and cherry pick interesting episodes once they're all out.
Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story (2022)
Lesbian golf mafia anime
This headline from Kotaku piqued my interest enough to check out this show. Sure, it has the typical anime tropes where the more power you give the better you are and the mental strain of golf depletes your stamina, which I thought were a little silly, but the characters and storylines was interesting enough to keep me invested. Also, even though most of it is just golfing, which I thought would be boring, it stays interesting because of the conflict brought up from those cliches. I watched both seasons (technically, the second is more of a continuation of the first) and I say I liked the first season better because there was more Mafia in it, and in the second season they split up the two main characters which was kind of sad. Thanks to this show, I want to try golf with all their power moves if I weren't so broke (golf is expensive!). I probably won't watch the 3rd season.
Yakusoku no Neverland (2019)
Required Viewing
Yay, an anime that has a finite story arc and doesn't continue forever! (I only watched s1) My favorite part was the planning segments, which reminded me a lot of Death Note's mental combat segments (albeit less intense). The twists and turns had me wondering who could be trusted. I say the most important things in a show to me are the world/situation and the characters, and The Promised Neverland checked both boxes. The children were likeable and clever endearing, and the premise of the show from episode 1 was enough to keep me hooked for the whole season. My only complaint is that I felt like the depiction of Sister Krone could've been slightly offensive.
