As I watched I could not help but draw comparisons to Anywhere but here (1999). This film follows the same story of a high school girl in a troubled relationship with their mother that wants to go away to college on the East Coast. However, Lady Bird does a much better job in almost all aspects of the film. The relationships throughout the movie with her mother, Danny, and Kyle all are more compelling and interesting.
The acting between Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Timothee Chalamet (Kyle) was amazing. Particularly when they are together, they seem to complement each other quite well. Even with limited dialogue the relationship or lack thereof is both infuriating and intriguing.
The ending is left ambiguous, but I believe this wraps the film up perfectly. Lady Bird is finally finding her own identity away from home and starting to accept who she is. This is a Great early piece of Greta Gerwig.
