Manifest (2018)
And the story continues...
I am so glad to see Season 3 of this series has started. Although I have to agree with some comments from other reviewers that the story plods along at times, I enjoy the performance of the character, Michaela Stone, so much that I want to keep watching. I had been afraid that "Manifest" would be cancelled after Season 2 ended. S3E1 was interesting and exciting, with scenes set in Cuba and Costa Rica. S3E2 dragged. I hope for better episodes to come, and I am still hooked -- so far.
Call of the Flesh (1930)
Simply boring
"Call of the Flesh" is a musical romance, so I was expecting lots of song (check) and lots of emotion (no). I have not seen Ramon Novarro in any other film, but this one certainly does not promote him, much as he is showcased in song and dance. His dancing was leaden. His singing was okay, but the songs were awful, and nothing to make even an innocent convent girl fall in love with. Ms Jordan's performance was touching and enjoyable. I just could not muster any enthusiasm for the story and gave up persevering through this movie by 40 minutes in.
Fargo: The Crocodile's Dilemma (2014)
Everything I hoped for!
From the snowy highway driving at night to the empty fields beside the highway, that music (from the movie), and the Minnesota accents, this is the dark, mysterious, and doom-filled scenario that has me hooked. Casting has some delightful surprises, including Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Allison Tolman, and superb performances.
Home at Last (1988)
A delightful story of boys, animals and family. (spoiler)
This is a straightforward story told simply, making it enjoyable family entertainment. At just about one hour long it's also suitable for even very young children; it will definitely appeal to teenagers.
I have no problem with the casting, but the Swedish accents of the farmers are a little too heavy when it comes to understanding all of the dialogue in two instances. The script itself is tight and believable.
I praise the settings and cinematography. The contrast of the dark squalor of New York City to the bright, summer plains of Nebraska is memorable. It made me want to spend some time in the rural Midwest!
Although the plot is predictable (everyone lives together happily ever after), getting there is what makes the story. A heartwarming viewing experience without being mushy.
