Father Brown: The Eye of Apollo (2013)
Fairly good episode with lame ending
Episode is mostly OK, but it has few problems.
- The mystery was quite obvious. For viewers, there is practically one suspect, and that is also the murderer.
- Brown's method to make murderer confess didn't make any sense. It was supposed to make murderer realize how they were wrong and misguided, but from their point of view, the proof presented didn't offer anything new or otherwise be enlightening. It felt a bit like deus ex machina solution, which was quite unsatisfying.
Writing of characters was fairly good, and episode is mostly good, except for the third act, where it seems that writers either run out of time, and took the easiest route, or something similar happened.
Father Brown: The Bride of Christ (2013)
Very strange episode
After this episode I just couldn't stop thinking why father Brown is so out of character. I almost had to quit the whole series because he was so out of character based on what was established on earlier episodes. This could have been a good place for character growth for Brown, but unfortunately writers just handwaved all the painful questions.
The victim of the week was excellent, as everyone had a reason to hate them, and so a reason to kill them. Unfortunately the opportunity was wasted and the killer came kind of out of the blue, and so feels superimposed and artificial.
As whole, the episode is somewhat disjointed. Titular character is very much out of character especially at the end. Sometimes that can show viewers new sides of characters, but in this case it makes the Brown just look like weather vane, whose moral compass points to easiest solution. Also Sullivan's last comment about the murderer is stupid. And it seems like a cop-out from writers, who are too afraid to say the murderer will face the gallows.
Unfortunately this is one of the weakest episodes. Mostly because of poor writing, which tries to criticize the historical wrong doings of catholic church, but does it half-assed, and also mistreats the main character.
I want to like this episode, but I cannot, because of poor writing.
Father Brown: The Serpent Within (2023)
This episode perfectly describe the 10th series
This episode perfectly describe the 10th series. Beginning had some promise, but that wasn't enough.
Acting was a bit poorer than usually.
Script was full of plot holes and cliches. The premise was implausible. Episode was also too similar to one series 3 episode, except this one made far less sense.
Direction was well below the average of whole show and this series, definitely worst of 10th.
It seemed that no one in crew anymore wanted to make this show, and just wanted to get get something scraped together as fast as possible.
Sad end for sad series. Hopefully 11th will be better, and this was the rock bottom of the show.
