The Bridge (I) (2013–2014)

Depressing but good
30 December 2023
I've seen all the seasons and mostly enjoyed this series. It depicts a group of police officers and people who are dealing with past and present trauma that effects they're daily lives. The characters are very well developed as is the plot. Several scenes can be very disturbing but realism seems to be what the writer's had in mind, and they have succeeded admirably. This is excellent Nordic noir and well worth the time. Like most of this genre the characters home lives are well developed right down to the inclusion of petulant teens that lend the obligatory angst that seems to inhabit most of the European series of this genre. It keeps you guessing right up to the end, which is after all why we love these programs.

A hidden Gem.

I always enjoy searching streaming channels for international programming. As more and more content from countries other than western English language offerings becomes available, and you don't mind subtitles, one can stumble across some really great series. And this is one of them. Set in Bulgaria and if you know anything about they're history you'd be thinking former soviet bloc, poor, country, how good could this be, e.g. Writing, acting, cinematography, production, etc. And the answer is first rate by any standards. The actors are excellent as is the writing, the story pulls you in and builds to its climax, while not boring you with needless dialog, that some series use to fill out episodes. The intricate plot could easily read like something you would get in a n in depth current news story. This is a really good local production that stands up to anything I've seen in this genre.

Raven (2018–2022)

Exceptional TV

Unlike most of the standard crime fare offered on streaming channels, you know the ones that seem like they are all written by the same writer's using the same template i.e.divorced single parent detective with a petulant rebellious teenager usually female, and most likely will be snached in time for the shows climax. Raven is so much more in all regards, the writing is not bogged down by useless dialog some shows need to stretch out episodes. The translation subtitles are excellent and leave no question about what is being said. And the acting is superb every single character is totally believable. This is a dark story, but isn't presented cynically or angrily.
