Fun for a time
24 April 2002
Terry Gilliam directed this story of a young boy who has been whisked away by six "vertically challenged" individuals who just happen to be misguided employees of the Supreme Being They were bored with their lives and decided it would be fun to "steal" the map that shows all the imperfections in the old space-time continuum -- and jump from time to time stealing things. Well, they take poor little Kevin with them, as they tromp through his bedroom and the fun really begins. The group visits Agamemnon Napoleon and eventually has a big-time run-in with the Evil Genius. Great initially but loses something on subsequent viewings.

Silly Fun
24 April 2002
This is a fish out of water story in which coach John Amos and sidekick Tim Conway find a young jungle man and figure he'd be a great athlete if he were taken to civilization to compete in athletic competitions. So they give it a try. Like many Disney films from the early 1970s, it's loaded with silly humor and contrived sentiment, yet there is a certain charm that may endear it to the younger members of its audience.

Basket of goodies
22 April 2002
BASKET CASE is an inspired blend of the shocking, the very darkly amusing and the downright inept. The film is a touching, horrific film that boasts some effective horror moments. It is fast, funny, bloody and wonderfully entertaining-even throwing some interesting animated sequences into the mix.

Just the tonic
18 April 2002
Nurse Betty is a blend of the believable and the surreal. Renee Zellwegger is very good as the titular character. Neil LeBute's best work so far. The scene in which Betty regains her grip on reality is one of the best in recent cinema.

Still A Big Mystery
16 April 2002
I love Blue Velvet. It's one of the greatest films of the 1980s. I watch it endlessly, trying to make sense of the great Lynchian moments. I got an advance copy of the new DVD with this documentary on it and am unfortunately still perplexed. There are current but not especially informative interviews with most of the cast but David Lynch only shows up in archival footage. What a pity. Sad to say that this doesn't shed much light on solving the mystery of David Lynch's best film and will probably serve as the last word on the film. Rather lackluster.
