May December (2023)
Very disappointing
I never really appreciated films directed by Todd Haynes and the film Secrets of a Scandal (May December) was another film directed by him that I added to the list of disliked ones. The performances of both Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore left a lot to be desired. The role played by Julianne Moore seemed easy to me, because she is practically oblivious throughout the entire film and is more concerned with the cakes she makes. The role played by the main actor (Charles Melton) also seemed easy to me because he speaks and interacts very little. In the film, Natalie Portman is an actress interested in learning more about a scandal that happened many years ago. Anyway, to top it off, the filming is pretty bad and parts of the film are confusing.
The Outfit (2022)
The Phoenix
The Tailor (2022) (The Outfit) reminds us of some Agatha Christie stories. It is a film with a single scenario and 1 hour and 45 minutes long. In some parts it can be entertaining but, in others, it abuses our patience, as it is boring. The whole story is more suitable for theater than for cinema. Some situations that appear in the film are not believable. Actor Mark Rylance always plays himself. Regardless of the role he plays, his performance is always the same. In this particular case, it is reminiscent of Anthony Hopkins' performance. I was unaware of the professional who preceded a tailor when making suits, known in England as a 'cutter', responsible for cutting the fabric. In the film, the tailor in question performs both functions. The film takes place in 1956 Chicago.
Forst (2024)
Disposable
The story that guides the series is quite absurdly weak and could have been better told in a film, instead of being extended, to the point where it could no longer be, in five episodes. The actors actually have a reasonable performance, considering the story and the dramatic roles that almost everyone plays. Violence with touches of perversity is a constant ingredient in the series, which helps to make it very tiring and also repetitive and similar to many others. The dialogues are few, poor and often quite confusing. We have to take into account, however, that subtitles are not always very faithful to the lines.
Underwater (2020)
A more scientifically modern Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
The film Underwater (2020) is quite bad, with even comical situations, considering how fast some of the mining company's employees walk on the ocean floor, taking into account that the depth of the place where the mining company was installed was greater than 10 km, if I'm not mistaken.
The setting in most scenes is very dark, particularly when some employees end up walking on the ocean floor, making it sometimes difficult to know who is who. The plot and scenography are reminiscent of that famous series in the 60s called Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-1968), in which monsters appeared in almost every episode (always successfully defeated!), threatening the submarine.
The film is based on a very weak story that has already been told in a fair amount of films. It's not even possible to evaluate the actors' performance because almost all the scenes are disaster scenes and the dialogues are very poor.
Voleuses (2023)
A very disappointing film
Wingwomen (Vouleuses 2023) is a film that goes on and on being silly since its beginning up to its end, which happens after almost 2 hours of wasted time. The four main characters, played by Mélanie Laurent (who is also the director of the film), Adèle Exarchopoulos, Isabelle Adjani and Manon Bresch cannot do much to improve the quality of the story, in spite of being talented actresses with a history of many good performances. IMDb characterizes the film as comedy+action+crime which is quite surprising because, in spite of having lots of actions and crimes, the comedy ingredient in the film is close to nothing.
The film has interesting scenarios which, unfortunately, do not contribute to improve its weak and silly plot.
Land (2021)
Mourning in the wild
Land (2021) is a film centered on a woman, played by Robin Wright (Edee), who went through a situation of loss and was searching for some meaning in her life. For her search she chooses to isolate herself in a deserted place, far from everything and everyone, but without having much idea of how to survive in this type of environment, assuming she was really considering to move on with her life. She knew little and invested little in learning about the region she chose and, also, she was not prepared for the harsh winter she would have to face and, most importantly, she forgot to acquire skills that she should master for having something to eat. Unfortunately the character Edee has not been well developed throughout the whole film.
