The Marvels (2023)
1/10
MEOW
25 December 2023
I attempted to watch 'The Marvels', contemplating whether a cinema visit might have been the better choice. Intriguingly, the film features a cat in a seemingly pivotal role. This feline character is not merely a background element; it prominently meows throughout, almost as if to constantly remind viewers of its presence - perhaps even enticing them to purchase related merchandise. However, this recurring meowing inadvertently distressed my own cat, leading to a rather frustrating viewing experience for me. Expecting a cinematic escape, I instead found myself managing my pet's anxiety and confusion, caused by the illusion of another cat's presence. Regrettably, I discontinued watching after 20 minutes. I hope that someday, a cat owner within the Marvel Studios team will recognize that such repetitive animal sounds are unnecessary and can be disruptive for household pets. Until then, viewers like myself might face unexpected challenges in enjoying their films.

A great reminder of what's going on in Ukraine, must see
30 November 2023
This documentary is about as real as it gets. The film is pieced together from footage shot in Mariupol during February and March 2022. You might have already seen snippets, especially from the maternity hospital, but this takes you day by day and includes some less common materials.

I won't get into the usual critiques of quality or story flow. That would be idiotic. They captured what they could in the midst of war, when everything including electricity for their cameras was at scarce. It surprises me that some reviewers are complaining, as if this were some Hollywood production in the making for five years. Jesus.

I recommend watching it. The war is ongoing, and it won't just disappear because we're tired of it. It serves as a powerful reminder to the world about what's happening in Ukraine every day.

I enjoyed my time with this show, but it lacks depth
27 November 2023
I enjoyed my time with this show, and while it has many commendable aspects, determining whether it deserves a 7 or an 8 was challenging.

The casting is good, with actors seamlessly fitting into their respective roles. The visual experience is also a delight.

However, the narrative leaves something to be desired. The plot feels densely packed, with characters making pivotal decisions at a rapid pace. While I intellectually grasp the reasoning behind their actions and moral choices, the characters' growth and development occur a bit too swiftly, rendering them not entirely convincing.

Perhaps, budget constraints played a role in this perceived lack of depth. Probably a few additional episodes could have provided the breathing room needed for more nuanced character arcs. Consequently, the show comes across as likable and intriguing but falls slightly short in delivering a fully matured and believable story.

In essence, the rating of 7 is not a dismissive "don't watch, it's weak" score. It's rather a "not good enough for 8" score.

Great documentary with no artificial drama
18 November 2023
This documentary predominantly consists of interviews with key individuals arranged in a well-thought-out sequence. It refrains from introducing artificial drama and avoids relying on external experts providing irrelevant commentary. The filmmakers wisely chose to engage with drivers, team personnel, and other significant figures such as Bernie Ecclestone, Christian Horner, Luca di Montezemolo, and many others. Even Felipe Massa makes an appearance, contributing insights into his incident in Hungary. I believe the only non-competitor from that period is Martin Brundle, whose expertise in Formula 1 is unquestionable. Personally, I found the documentary thoroughly enjoyable and informative, gaining new insights into the sport. I hope for more documentaries of this caliber, delving into the intricacies of the sport I love very much.
