Bin-jip (2004)
excellent and unusual - a film of calm menace beautiful to watch
Tired of beautiful swords-women flying across oriental rooftops ? Try "3-Iron" for a calm retreat from digital mayhem, a carefully-etched romance between a upscale house-breaker prosperous enough to own a BMW (but lacking a fixed address) and an abused photo model unlucky in marriage. Some chichi mysticism but if Tai-Chi's your dish this Korean film is for you. The violence done to the abused wife is condoned when she gets her own back with a hefty PC slap to her husband's face. Otherwise golf balls hit with the title 3-iron into human bodies (of the abusive husband and the ugly cop who arrests the hero and a girl car passenger in the way of a random chip shot) curiously but only occasionally fulfill viewers' needs for visceral gratification.
Kidnapping - Ein Vater schlägt zurück (1998)
huggy-feely heart-of-gold-single-parent snatch tale
A collector's item for Luca Zingaretti fans, this gooey story of single parent guilt and redemption ends in weepy climax that includes a tracking shot above the old Maremma cattle town of Grosseto (pinching-hitting for Castiglione) with its candy-cane Duomo and arcaded piazza- almost, but not quite, worth the long
wait. Good casting, harsh color, over-the-top score.
Terminal Velocity (1994)
For Sheeners and lovers of long, zany endings, a must-see.
Saw it, forgot it, saw it again last night and before I reforget this cockeyed film, let me urge fans of the Great Sheenes not to leave this on the shelf at Blockbuster or miss a rescheduling on the box. It has a soul-satisfyingly long, credulity-defying, wacky ending they should include in an anthology of odd endings.
