The Killing Season (2016)
"Rachel and I" Fall far short of potential.
This had the makings of a great unsolved crime documentary. A few intriguing clues, cooperative friends and families of the victims, and phone contact potentially from the killer to the loved ones of some victims. Unfortunately the filmmakers chose to make it about themselves and their amateurish investigative techniques "Rachel and I" is said way more during this show than any names of law enforcement officials or victims loved ones. (One could get quite intoxicated taking a drink every time he says "Rachel and I" on camera). They act as driver for a prostitute as she meets her johns for an evening; they surreptitiously record a retired law enforcement officer- unsuccessfully hoping a victim's sister will recognize his voice. Their guru is a German talk show guest posing as a "profiler." All for no identifiable purpose.
Somehow they take a dramatic enough subject, and over-dramatize it to comic levels. They eventually lose focus on what they are supposedly "documenting", and go on a crusade- seemingly to smear police all over the country as incompetent. Skip "Rachel and I"; This had the same feeling as watching Geraldo Rivera dig and explode his way into Al Capone's vault.
H. H. Holmes: Original Evil (2018)
Boring
Somehow they managed to take one of the most horrific serial killers ever, and make his story boring- almost unwatchable. Dramatizations were unhelpful and distracting. The timeline was horrendous. The narration was painfully slow and as undramatic as could be. Just a mess.
