The Love Guru (2008)
Probably the worst film I have ever seen..
Yes this one is getting panned and so it should as this is the worst film that you will see for some time, and that is no mean feet considering that at least half of the films that come out of Hollywood are frankly awful.
I was made to go through work and all of the bad reviews I read prior to watching this were correct in every way. In fact you will seldom find such universally negative consensus on a film, the only recent exception would be The Happening.
Myers last titles were good, but the sequels only survived because of the solid foundation that the first films laid, I refer to Wayne's World and Austin Powers. This film truly is terrible and what only shocks me more is that, on reading some of the other reviews here, some viewers liked it...?
My last point is Jessica Alba, as stunning beautiful as she is, as an actress she is quite average..
Enjoy..
Cloverfield (2008)
You'll either love it or hate it..
You'll notice that this one has had rather mixed set of reviews, I am a fan of this film but can understand the mixed reaction as this is like no other film you've seen before.
Parallels to the Blair Witch Project, for me are unfounded..
If you can get over the jerky camera shots, and there is some serious jerkiness here, you'll be fine.
The suspense is terrific and the effects are seriously well done. The monster is unlike anything you have seen before, and you will be asking yourself how this thing ever arrived in town, but it doesn't matter!
Some reviews have criticised the level of character interrogation, but this is not why you go and see a movie like this..
I was intrigued, I was surprised and I enjoyed it a lot..
Alien (1979)
All of the superlatives in the world are not enough..
Quite simply one of the greatest films ever made.. Years ahead of its time in every way, concepts, script, acting, cinematography all combine for an execution which is totally flawless...It started the greatest of all movie franchises, malevolent, dark, scary, credible and visionary.
H.R Giger's alien is magnificent, beyond reasoning hellbent on mindless slaughter yet intelligent and cunning. A creature who's dark allure still to this day holds our imagination and fear in equal measure.
Next year the film will be 30 years old which I still find staggering, Ridley has made a timeless classic, the visual presentation is as sumptuous as any modern day sci-fi.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Don't believe the hype..
Will Ferrell plays the lead here and unfortunately it doesn't work for him. I am a fan of his more slap stick roles, which he excels, but the dead pan state of Harold Crick in this is not something that suits his style. Hoffman and Thompson are good so too Gyllenhaal but they don't make up for a film that fails to draw in an audience.
The story line has true originality but you don't really build any empathy with the characters so in the end you tire of Crick's predicament and the film's sentiment is lost.
Films are subjective and everyone takes something different away from viewing. Friends of mine loved Little Miss Sunshine, others didn't get it. I think in the end this film will polarise audiences as some will really like it but many more wont understand the fuss..
