Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art (2023)
A lot of fun and a great doc about the art scene
The life of Scooter LaForge is an interesting one, I have to admit to having only a casual view of art and the deeper meanings behind it. However this documentary explained to me the art in a way that was both easy to follow and informative.
Knowing a lot of people who experimented with drugs and other unsavory behaviour (not me I am too innocent) it was interesting to see how he found his own form of inner peace. A lot of people are addicts one way or another and his art is well worth his need to create.
As a lover of fashion it was intersting to see how he combined art with clothing. I am not sure if I could afford one of his pieces but the designs are very cool. Respect as well for him mentioning that his style is openly gay especially with the growing homophobia around.
Toxic Impulses (2022)
Great film especially for fans of noir films
There is something about the film noir genre than makes people fascinated. Maybe it is the danger or maybe it is becuase of the many twists and turns that permeate these types of stories.
Toxic Impulses is one of the good ones keeping the audiences guessing and always throwing curveballs along the way to stop us from getting complacent.
The heist scenes add a great amount of tension in the film and I believe it works well. A particular hightlight for me is one scene where they are trying to escape a heist in the car. The tension builds slowly and it is things like this which mean that this delightful little indie is worth your time.
Move Me No Mountain (2023)
Interesting lead
The film doens't pull any punches from the start, something is troubling the main protagonist and it is not an easy fix.
Las Vegas shows its seedier side in this exploration of the human condition and what makes us human. Jennas overwhelming grief leads her to to leave her home and voluntairily become homeless. The people in the streets and in the underground passes both treat her horribly and it does a lot to explain the plight a lot of the homeless must feel.
I felt affected by the film as well, having been taken with grief in the past it gave me a new perspective on things which is nice especially when you are left alone with your thoughts.
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
Maybe not Bonds finest hour
I am not going to lie the film was not selected by me but was chosen by my partner from the rahter great Bond collection on Blu Ray.
I really wanted bond to be a bit more typical, the George Lazenby version barely fires a gun and seems to be pretending to be scottish nobility. Sure the intrigue is nice but the reality is that the film looks and feels like it was supposed to be a PG film.
Maybe don't grab this one as an introduction to the bond world, for those of us who are more experienced in it then maybe it is good as a curious.
Another thing to note as well is that this was the first bond film I have seen where he gets married! And then promtly loses the wife in the space of like 10 minutes.
Hemisphere (2023)
A fun and interesting indie movie
When we usually think of space films there is a certain image that pops up in most of our heads. That is of people in spandex suits shooting laser beams at each other (either that or Star Wars) so it was quite to my surprise when this film breached new ground. It felt like a mix of a proto noir film with a fleshed out drama, the characters were very admirably fleshed out and felt like real people.
While the budget was very indie the spaceships felt well put together and (most importantly) lived in! The sets weren't the gleaming setup of something like Star Trek and felt more like what my memories were of staying on a ship. Lots of small messes everywhere (though considerably less bodies) and small spaces to get lost in.
If you want something interesting and novel I would highly reccomend you check it out!
Dublin Crust (2023)
A joyously punk exploration of friendship and loss
I had a lot of fun watching the film, it had a wonderful energy to it throughout that made it hard to leave by the end.
When I was younger I used to be in a couple of punk bands (which is super ironic considering what I am now) and the film almost gave me memories of a time I never had.
If you had a copy of the ramones knocking about you will enjoy the sound track as well which is a nice mix of that and other genres. There is a couple of samples of the songs on youtube which I highly reccomend checking out especially All This Gold which is a particularly great punk song.
Ultimately I really reccomend the film, it is a really funny and at times beautiful film. R.
