Fallout (2024)
What. A. Letdown.
I've been a massive fan of the games. Put hundreds and hundreds of hours into them. So I'm familiar with the quirky world and sometimes dark characters and situations. And the games are also violent. But SERIOUSLY. People who find this level of absurd gore and ultraviolence entertaining are disturbed individuals. The makers of this show just want it to be "The Boys", but why can't it just be Fallout? You've already got an extremely popular, highly beloved franchise with an incredibly rich world to play in. This show could be incredible. It takes some special people to turn such a sure thing into garbage.
1883 (2021)
Very Enjoyable.
APART FROM the overly indulgent and tedious existential voice over from the otherwise incredible Isabel May, this is a solid, incredibly engaging and well-made epic tale of frontier America. The performances are stellar. Even from Faith Hill and Tim McGraw for whom I didn't have high expectations. I can understand why some people think it's too slow, but apart from the narration, I don't think it is to the show's detriment. A sweeping epic tale like this deserves the chance to bask in the beauty and the grandeur of the West - as well as the humanity of the powerful story. This particular story may be fictional, but it represents the stories of thousands of real-life pioneers and immigrants. I appreciate that while the narration tries to romanticize the frontier, the story itself begs you not to. The West is a great paradox, as this show depicts. Brutal. Scary. Vast. Unpredictable. And absolutely Glorious.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Finally Paramount is Listening!
This is what Star Trek fans were hoping for when Paramount announced they were making new Trek shows for Paramount+. Their mission? Seeking out new life and new civilizations. Not trying to indoctrinate us with propaganda every other scene. THANK YOU for returning to what made Trek WORK. And THANK YOU for getting a captain with actual charisma! If you were burnt by Discovery and Picard - at least try this - it should feel a bit more familiar.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Boldly going down the toilet...
First of all.... Just scroll through these reviews, look at all the 1 star reviews and explain to me how it can possibly have a 7.5 out of 10. Does wokeness automatically give it a bonus 5 stars??? Bottom line is - you're either a progressive who gets excited about watching liberal propaganda - or you are everybody else, who doesn't understand how this can be called Star Trek, who is insulted by the heavy-handed melodrama, and who (speaking of heavy-handed) tuned in to watch a sci-fi show with relatable characters and ended up being spoon fed the angst of woke poster children teaching us lessons each episode from the Hollywood diversity handbook. At least when previous Trek shows dealt with diversity or sexism or progressive issues, they did it in an organic and INTERESTING way. Instead we just get speeches about which pronouns to use. Please cancel this show and start over. Your alienating your fan base. Pun intended. I find it humorous that they now expect people to SUBSCRIBE/PAY to watch this garbage.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Exactly the movie it should be...
If you're gonna make a movie based on the famous Jungle Cruise Disney ride, you couldn't do better than this. No this isn't cinema for snooty people. But it pays homage to a great ride and does it in the way Disney does best. I don't understand the low scores on this one. This movie was so much fun. If you enjoyed my review, my name is Jesse, thanks for reading it. If you didn't enjoy it, my name is Kathleen Kennedy.
The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse (2020)
Ruined Mickey with this garbage...
The fact that there are people who defend this show and claim it is a great just proves how desensitized people are these days, and the sad, immature, artless depths to which cartoons have fallen.
This is NOTHING like Mickey Mouse and gives Mickey a bad name. The animation style is ugly. It's not funny whatsoever. The whole thing just feels gross. My kids tried watching it and were confused as to what they were watching.
Making this show is one of Disney's bigger blunders.
Haywire (2011)
Soderbergh's student film???
This is a star-studded film and Carano does an admirable job. She's a better actress than most people give her credit for. The script is serviceable. But what the crap is up with Soderbergh's directing? Doesn't help that he also phoned it in as the cinematographer. It's hard to watch sometimes but that falls squarely on Soderbergh's shoulders. Not sure if he just trying too hard to by stylistic with this one, but the style he landed on was crap. Bad pacing, confusing camera-work, horrid color-correction (or is that on purpose?) and weird sound design. Otherwise, I was pleasantly surprised.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Sanctuary (2020)
*GROAN*
Adira is the most pointless character. They is not interesting. I mean, them has no real purpose but to give the writers an opportunity to be pedantic. Oh wait, why does that sound incredibly stupid to say? Because IT IS. Let's relearn (or completely demolish) the entire English language because people want validation for their identity crisis and a contemporary hot topic with no basis in science whatsoever. Go back to trying to tell good stories instead of preaching to me about your progressive garbage agenda.
See (2019)
Fresh and Fascinating with Impressive World-building
This series is one of the best new shows in the last decade.
It has a great, original concept. It has been executed beautifully. The performances couldn't be any better. And c'mon - watching Jason Momoa kick butt without the ability to see is about as exciting as it gets.
Been dying for season 2 to be announced! Can't wait!!!
The Man with the Iron Fists (2012)
This what you call indulgence...
I gave it 2 stars for the sake of the crew and the cinematographer that knew what they were doing.
The rest is nonsense. Someone thought it would be awesome to indulge RZA's dream of creating a kung fu movie. And starring in it. And while most of the acting is decent, RZA is hard to watch. Talented actors like Russel Crowe may fool you into thinking you're watching a real movie at certain points, but that won't last long. The story itself is clunky. The gore is pointlessly excessive. Oh, and did I mention RZA? His character serves no real purpose and could be left out of the story without it really changing much at all. His character does literally NOTHING until joining the climactic fight scene in the final 20 minutes. That's also the first time you see the "iron fists" in action. Maybe they should retitle this movie: "The Man with One Expression Who Watches a Diverse Group of Fighters Kill Each Other for 2 Hours Before Killing Like Three Guys so He Can Have a Movie Named After Him".
Not sure how this one got made.
