The Color Purple (2023)
Fails to Emotionally Connect
It's been 30 years since I've seen my sister and my "dead" children. When we meet again(a total surprise to me), I scream, I run to them, I cry, and I hug them tight. I'm overwhelmed with emotion.
That's Celie's ending in the original The Color Purple, and somewhat the ending in this version. There's a huge difference between the two, though.
In the original The Color Purple, viewers felt connected to Celie. When she reunited with Nettie and her children, it felt like we were being reunited with our long lost family. That isn't there in this adaptation. It just felt like a family get-together that happens every week. And that's just one of the many problems that I have with this version.
Every scene is so rushed that there's no connecting to any of the characters, and I think a big part of that is because of the singing. It would've been better to use regular dialogue to flush out the characters so that the audience could connect to them emotionally. Yes, I understand that this was based on the stage play, but I personally think that it didn't translate well to the screen at all. I can continue with the problems that I have with the movie, but I think I've made an obvious point.
I do have to say that everyone did a great job as far as the acting goes. And the songs, even though I feel they prevent emotional connections, were performed extremely well.
This is my opinion, of course. Maybe I'm being a bit unfair because I'm a huge fan of the original movie. I'm just glad that I didn't spend money to watch it in the theater.
Prehistoric Predators (2023)
Haha!
So I was scrolling through Tubi and I came across this jewel of a movie. Unfortunately, the jewel is a cubic zirconia. Awkward nude sunbathing and showering scenes (though the view is quite nice), and an even more awkward masturbation scene. The scenery goes from lush green to prehistoric brown between shots, the CGI is horrible, the acting is horrible, and the dialogue (the little that there is) is just bad. And the dinosaur kills are laughable. Laugh out loud laughable. I don't know if this movie was meant to be taken seriously, or if it was meant to be taken as a joke. If it's the latter, mission accomplished. Someone call up MST3K quick!
The Upshaws (2021)
Watchable, but unnecessarily vulgar
I get that they're trying to be real, but the cursing takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it for me. It feels forced, overused, and unnecessary. And Kim Fields is not the right person for the role that she plays. She's a great actress, but she sounds horrible when she curses or tries to be mean. The same goes for the baby momma. The actress is awesome, but she's not right for the role. And for some reason they have the daughter cursing. Why? She sounds fake when she does it. In addition to that, she's obnoxious and annoying. The show is good, they just need to cut down on the cursing. It is worth a watch, though. My opinion.
Untraceable (2008)
Stupid decisions
The movie is decent, but some of the decisions that were made were simply stupid. For instance, if you get out of your SUV because someone has hacked into its computer and shut it completely down, why get back in it when the lights turn back on without checking the back seat? And she's an FBI agent? SMH
It's worth a watch, but could've been better.
Teen Witch (1989)
Top That!
I didn't see this movie back in '89. Last night, I was browsing through one of the free streaming services with my daughter and it was on. I clicked on it, and luckily it was the rap scene. It is the greatest rap performance of the 80s. The rhymes, the dances, the music... That's why I give this movie a 10. If you don't watch the entire movie, watch that scene. Lol.
House of Payne (2006)
10 in 25...
If you're confused by my title, let me explain. If the unnecessarily drawn-out conversations immediately got to the point, the 25 minute shows would last about 10 minutes. Hence, a 10 minute story told in 25 minutes.
There are a lot more reasons for my 3 stars, but I don't feel like writing a book. Let's just say that there is no comedy in this comedy.
The Paynes (2018)
A show that you make because you can. SMH
I was excited when this show was announced. I was excited during the first couple of episodes. Then it became what it currently is: UNFUNNY AND UNINTERESTING! The audience's laughter at everything that is said by the cast is irritating, especially since it's never funny, and the plot is nothing but C.J., Jasmine, and Malik flipped to a single mother with two obnoxious children.
On House of Payne, the Ella character was the aunt that everyone wanted, and the Curtis character was funny, but serious when he needed to be. Now Ella seems like a watered-down version of Madea, and Curtis is too irritating to watch.
And the acting is horrible! The kids can't act, their mom can't act, and the young guy at the laundromat can't act. The only way to describe it is cardboardish. And why, Jackee Harry, did you accept a role that has you acting so...not Jackee Harry?
BRING BACK THE ENTIRE CAST OF HOUSE OF PAYNE! BRING BACK THE QUALITY OF HOUSE OF PAYNE! BRING BACK THE TALENTED ACTORS OF HOUSE OF PAYNE!
I give 2 stars because of the episodes that had the cast of House of Payne. Other than that...SMH
