Last Wedding (2001)
It sure is realistic (spoilers)
I watched this film last night. I liked it very much. 'Last Wedding' tells the story of the three couples and the problems they confront. The problems, all serious, range from miscommunication, physical and emotional abuse, professional conflicts to cheating. But I have to say that some people seem to be confused by the title of the film and think that all the main characters are married. That is not the case. As a matter of fact, only one of the couples is married. The other two live together.
The main reason why I decided to write about this film is that I was really surprised for one or two of comments I've read here. The main couple, the one we met since the start of the film, and the one that gets married, is the protagonist of a real messy relationship. After only six months of meeting each other, Noah (Benjamin Ratner) and Zipporah (Frida Betrani) decide to get married. They do it but things don't go well since the beginning. Noah doesn't know it but her wife wants to make it as a professional singer but apparently she doesn't have enough talent. So, she stays home with nothing more to do than watch TV. She doesn't confide in her husband whom she doesn't even let enter to her music room. Noah, on her part, is falling apart. He always had doubts about the wedding but he kept it going. But, after the wedding, he's devastated. His wife won't talk to him. And then the violence comes. In one very poignant scene, the telephone rings, Noah asks Zipporah to answer it, she ignores him even though she has the phone at her side. Noah loses it and breaks one of the ceramic horses figures that Zipporah collects. How does she reacts? She takes the phone and hits one of Noah's ears with it. It wasn't the first time we saw a violent Zipporah but until that point we've never seen her actually hitting her husband. After that, Noah tries to discuss her relationship with Zipporah but she refuses. She thinks everything is all right. One particular interesting detail is that all the times Zipporah realizes she has messed it up, she tries to seduce Noah. At the beginning of their relationship, that would work. Zipporah would lose it and then have incredible sex with Noah and things would go back to normal. But of course , that wouldn't work forever. Noah gives it up and takes every opportunity he has to humiliate Zipporah for her singing skills (she hits him again after that one) and her lack of formal preparation. So, to sum it up, this couple's relationship terribly SUCKS.
I decided to write so much about Noah and Zipporah because some people here have written that this couple was the funniest one. But I am sure that if instead of Zipporah, Noah would've been the one who physically abused his wife, nobody would dare to say that it was funny. Oh, yeah, this husband hits her wife, develops an abusive relationship with her, and every time he does hit her, he brings flowers... oh, yeah, VERY funny. No, it isn't. Hey, I know this movie is supposed to be a comedy and it is, but I can't accept that what it makes it funny is a gender bias. Men cannot be abused. If they are, it's funny. No, it's not funny. I felt bad not only for Noah but also for Zipporah.
The other two couples face difficult problems also. College professor Peter (Tom Scholte) cheats on Leslie (Nancy Sivak) with a student. Arquitect Shane (Vincent Gale) seems unable to cope with his girlfriend Sarah's (Molly Parkers)sudden success. We don't get to explore these two couples very much. For example, I was confused with what were the real roots of Shane's discomfort. Was it because he was experiencing professional jealousy of his girlfriend? Or was it because they had really different perspectives of how architects should work? Anyway, the lack of information doesn't stop us from getting their conflicts.
The main asset of this film is that it rings real. Watching the film makes you promise not to make the same mistakes of the characters. "Get to know each other well before marriage" "Listen to each other" "Don't cheat" "Respect each other's interests" are some of the tips.
Tears of the Sun (2003)
...
Oh , man, this was BAD. I blame BB for not having anything else for renting. I should´ve known what to expect when the movie box described Belluci´s character as a beautiful doctor. Whaaaat??? What about a sensitive, loyal, compromised doctor??? NO. It got to be beautiful. Nice. Of course, there was that scene when Belucci is running showing her décolleté. Not to talk about the sexual tension between her character and Willi´s. Oook.
We got the good guys (christian) and the bad guys (muslim) and the militar man that put his conscience before the lives of his men because now he gives a f--ck. . Ohhh, the military has a heart. Touching. Sorry but when the movie ended , all I could think of was "poor Bruce, after all this trouble, and now he´s facing Martial Court" Oh well, maybe we get a second part...
oh please, no, no, I learned my lesson. I swear. US military has a heart. And bombing does help to eliminate evil from the planet. See?? please, please, not a second part, not a second part!!! :(
Just Married (2003)
...
I laughed
I laughed
and
I laughed!
LOVED the main characters, and even though some of the jokes were showed in the trailer, I still managed to enjoyed them.
Plus, Ashton Kutcher provided delicious eye candy. This is the first one of his movies that I've watched and I'm already loving the guy.
D-Tox (2002)
...
Watch out>>>>> It might have spoilers >>>>>
The great thing that happens with me and Sly movies is that I never never have great expectations when I rent one of his movies. More or less, I know what I'm gonna get. That was no different with Eye see You (now I found out about the D-Tox title).
The movie could be described in one word: PREDICTABLE. People here are saying that the killer was discovered too early in the movie. Jeez, I knew who was it since he opened his mouth at the "clinic". That would put me off with any other movie but not this time. I managed to enjoy the whole thing. I am not really sure why. Maybe it was the fact that I was truly touched with the main character trauma. Or maybe it's the fact that the killer's motivations were political: (the State's use of force, natural selection..) Yeah, I know that was only explored by the director in the opening credits but it still kept me interested throughout the movie. For example, because of that I knew which one of the cops would be the first one to get killed at the clinic. Unfortunately, the director or the writer didn't follow that logic with the rest of the killings.
At the end, this a so-so Sly movie. And even though I can't help but to feel weird when I watch Stallone crying, I'll admit that he got me all sad in the first part of the movie. Thanks to the writer/director for not showing him falling in love with another woman. That would've been a big no no.
So, bottom line? If you don't expect much, you might end it up liking it.
Darkness Falls (2003)
when bad goes horrible
So I watched Darkness Falls because a friend of mine recommended it. Best thing about watching the movie? Now I know I CANNOT trust this friend's movie tastes. Maybe I'll save some bucks in a near future.
The first scenes kind of promised something... but then we saw The Toothy Fair. They lost me there. In today horror films, we don't expect the director to give us every piece of information he's gotten about the EVIL. We know he knows!! We want the suspense, we want to believe that maybe that horrible thing in our screen can happen to us... we don't want to know everything.... Anyways, that's how I felt about horror genre. 3/10 (1 point for the cute boy, 2 points for the first 5 minutes of the movie. I'm kind.)
The Hours (2002)
good movie syndrome
Wow, I am really surprised for some of the comments posted here. I think 'The Hours' is being the victim of the "good movie syndrome". When so many critics and non-critics say that a movie is great, there come the people who watch the movie and say "nah, it's not that good" for just not to be part of the crowd. And when the movie is nominated for the Oscar, things go rougher. Anyway, I LOVE the film. Out of the three marvelous actresses that played the main roles, my favorite by far was Julianne Moore. I really hope she gets the Oscar. About the plot, I'd admit that 'The Hours' is a movie for women (in the political sense) and that makes it very special to my heart. Maybe for that reason, I didn't find it depressing. I think the film is a hymn to the dignity of the human being, to the right to choose what's best for us and to the courage to be different and seek for our happiness.
Feardotcom (2002)
oh ok...
I spent part of Valentine's night watching feardotcom. I mean, if you don't have a date for Valentine, you really don't want to spend the night watching 'When Harry met Sally', right? However, the movie sucked pretty hard. It was boring, confusing... thanks God for dvd players. I think I forwarded the complete last half of the movie. It was that bad.
At least they didn't kill the cat, my favorite character of the movie.
