Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement (2007)
Paranoia pop culture marches on
Alex Jones' documentaries are wrought with intrigue and paranoia. This is what makes them so entertaining.Once again his old enemies are afoot. The New World order are having a pow wow.The Bilderberg group, made up of major powerbrokers, bankers and leading politicians,is meeting again and Alex and his crew are picketting the meeting and reporting on those arriving at the meeting. Of course this is just a springboard for Jones'delivery of information about the global elite who control the planet and manipulate wars on the planet to accrue wealth. Top stuff if you like this sort of thing.Yes,the truth is out there and fascinating when presented by the likes of Conspiracy Celeb Alex Jones.
The Messengers (2007)
Pretty Horror movie
Without being to precious, this film is totally enjoyable.Granted,it is clichéd,but how much horror ends up cliché.Fear is a basic instinct and is good material for a movie trip. This one is referential of other movies of the genre.Crows acting menacingly, stark black ramshackled house, flashbacks hinting at some horrendous event.Pang bros have made a totally watchable flick that could be watched by anyone. Not necessarily horror movie fans.Minimal potty language which is a blessed relief and no gratuitous sex scenes.Meaning that it can be a hit with young teenagers who tend towards terror movies.Beautifully filmed.Highly recommended as pure bubblegum and don't expect anything deep and meaningful. No gore Igor.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)
Dark Fantasy of surreal proportions
I'm a book dealer and for years Suskind's novel was in high demand.Being a secondhand bookshop we had a list as long as your arm of people requesting the novel. The novel is striking. So is the movie.Bravo to the makers of this attractive rendition of a peculiar story. Some of the scenes, fleetingly, remind me of Jodorowsky movies.Though in this film the violence is understated and not needing emphasis. The fellow who plays the main protagonist is superb.Well cast,he is the measure of a dark anti-hero. Dustin Hoffmann is well cast, especially considered was his large hooter.Setting up a madcap irony,a whiff of humor amidst the mysteriousness of the film. Beautifully filmed even Peter Greenaway comes to mind with some of the tableau. Worth a look even if you aren't that fond of darker themed cinema. A great and dreamlike experience.True cinema.
Death Proof (2007)
Tarantinoland is big fun always
Can't see why people dismiss DEATH PROOF as being an inferior product.Heck Quentin Tarantino makes such good cinema that is indelibly stamped with his characteristic signature. I suppose the movie is purely a referential hoot for film buffs and those who have a bent for irresponsible cinema.In-jokes abound, cameo roles.Hey,great to see that mad film maker Eli Roth turn up playing what appears to be his scabrous self. Kurt Russell's evolution from Disney movies to Snake Pliskin and now Stuntman Mike. Stuntman Mike is just a jaded Snake Plisken with some unusual interests.I figure Quentin has intentionally besmershed the genres mixing it all up to produce some pure American grunge. DEATH PROOF is thoroughly enjoyable if you dig trashy movies and let's face it,trashy flicks are great time wasters. They're also great escapes from the hard rigours of life in the 21st century. The version that has been released separately as opposed to the GRINDHOUSE package is far superior. Come on admit it,Quentin Tarantino makes FUN movies.
The Dub Room Special! (1984)
Classic Zappa for the initiated
Any Zappa fan is going to enjoy this movie. There are memorable performances of such titles as STINKFOOT and INCA ROADS.Looks to be clips cobbled together from two different performances. The movie has Frank's signature zany surrealism and the musicianship is impeccable. The Mothers line-up includes Napoleon Murphy Brock whose on-stage antics make for humor-filled viewing.
An air of good humor envelops the film and the claymation sequences are superb.
Probably only relevant to Zappa fans, any novice would probably find the whole project confusing.
