All the Way Home (1963)
Beautiful and poignant
Set in the turn of the century, this is a wonderful period piece. Micheal Kearney as Rufus, the couples little boy is sweet and realistic. His father, Jay Follet played by Robert Preston is a top- notch, Oscar caliber performance. His interaction and love for his family is the most realistic that I have ever seen in a movie. Jean Simmons is great, too, her character is heartbreaking and moving. If you get a chance to see this, do it. I don't want to give away the story, but the tragedy she has to deal with will make you think about your loved ones and what it would be like if they were taken away suddenly. A real tear-jerker but a beautiful film.
Sally and Saint Anne (1952)
Sweet and fun
I love this movie, one of my all time favorites. Ann Blythe as Sally O'Moyne is sweet and trouble-free. She believes that praying to Saint Anne will solve all her and her friends troubles. The sub-plot of the dastardly bad man to get her father's property is funny and clever. Her brothers are what kind of brothers any girl would love to have. Also, look for "Aunt Bee" as her mother, a strong Irish woman who won't leave her house that she brought her family up in. They don't make them like this anymore, that's for sure.
The Cowboy and the Lady (1938)
Beautiful Cinematography
I love this movie for several reasons, the plot, the acting and the beautiful cinematography. There are beach scenes and others that have a dreamlike, gauzy quality that I really love. Gary Cooper is the naive but cute cowboy and Merle as Mary the wealthy socialite who tries to hide it from him. She doesn't mean any harm, she's lonely and isolated and finds herself in an awkard situation that gets worse quickly. Don't miss Walter Brennan as his sidekick (as usual) and the other fun characters throughout this sweet and fun movie.
Jennie Gerhardt (1933)
Wonderful, sad, long lost movie
This is probably one of the better movies you'll never see. It's a poignant "old timey" movie about a poor girl who falls in love with a Senator. She finds herself pregnant but in love with him and about to marry, but fate intervenes in tragedy. This is one that used to be shown on AMC, but probably will never be aired again, which is a shame. Ms. Sydney is hauntingly beautiful and Mr. Arnold as her lover is very good. Maybe if your lucky, TCM or another station will air this gem and you'll see what I mean.
On Borrowed Time (1939)
Great child actor
I bought this movie sight unseen due to hearing about it on another movie forum. I'm glad I did because this is a great old movie. The child actor Bobs Watson as Pud is truly amazing, very natural. This is a real tear-jerker so be ready because his and Barrymore's performance will get even the most stoic viewer going. You'll even learn some new "cuss" words that are actually charming when spoken by the young Pud. You'll think you've died and gone "where the woodbines twineth".
