Waking Life (2001)
Boring, boring, and... booorrriiinnnggggggg!!!!!!!!
This is supposed to be new, innovative, original. It's not. It's a series of people having speedy, intellectual, philosophical conversations or recitations, which you don't care about and aren't interesting. The difference here is that we don't get to see the actual actors, because the filmmakers have splashed them with bright painted colors. WHO CARES? Give me an interesting story-line anyday. I saw where one viewer said this is the way of the future. Urgh!, let's hope not!
Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
The genius advent of the music video and Eraserhead
The above title says it all. The Beatles are to thank for MTV and much of what is thought of as "weird cinema." This mystery trip pre-dates A Clockwork Orange, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Liquid Sky, and all other cult mega-masterpieces. Very colorful and enjoyable with that undeniable Beatles wit and charm, this film is the predecessor to the video album or companion - a film complete with music videos. The Beatles invented the music video with Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane. Thank God, they kept it up with classics like I Am the Walrus. Simply, ahead of its time.
The Sex Monster (1999)
Mike Binder IS like Woody Allen!!!
I was skeptical to rent this movie after seeing some of the bad comments on imdb, but sometimes you have to take the plunge and decide for yourself. Thank God, I did and didn't listen to all of you who poo-pood this film. Binder is hilarious. He has a way of capturing the moment in his expression like great comedians (which he is) do. His film-making is nicely done as well, keeping the camera on his character as things go wrong, so you can wretch along with him. Hemingway is really a truly unsung actress. She can do anything, and here she and Binder are the perfect funny couple. Whoever said in their review that Binder is no Woody Allen was wrong. If you like Allen, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Steve Martin: the greats, etc., you'll love this film. I promise!
Just a Kiss (2002)
Worth seeing for Tomei and Eldard and humor
Don't be so hard on this film, all of you who are putting it down. It's not going to win an oscar for any reason, but it's different and it's not stupid. It's definitely worth a rental fee. The film dabbles in black humor and Tomei is sexy as always. There are some silly moments which make it worth seeing, for instance a certain commercial actor. The soundtrack is inspiring, as it is trippy groove music, and the animation parts make it different. The acting is fine on all levels. Definitely worth seeing if you like the actors in the film. 7.5/10
Haiku Tunnel (2001)
I've laughed more at funerals
This is just plainly a stupid movie written by a guy who plays a pointless character. The acting is along the lines of a bad high school play and it's not funny at all. It's not cute or thoughtful. The main character (who wrote this) should stick to staying out of the way of the lens. If I had ten thumbs, they'd all be down. I didn't laugh once.
