a true dip in the series
1 November 2023
First, I want to say: the book version of this is one of the funniest, if not the funniest, thing I've ever read. I don't know why they had to amend the movie so much to something not only different, but unlikable.

Renee really put in the work on the first movie to get a proper British accent, but in this one she just sounds like someone trying to talk with a British accent.

As always, the Hugh Grant storyline was great, except for the stupid fight. Is that really how men fight?

Fortunately for this movie, the third one was filmed and we were able to forget about this one entirely....hopefully...

The religion of the main characters is irrelevant, it could be any small town church.
23 October 2023
After having attended a small town Christian church in the US for several years, this show accurately shows how hard it is to minister to people in a small church in the middle of nowhere. Every parishioner in your church wants you to cater totally to them. You must please both the liberal and extreme conservatives in your flock without compromising basic beliefs. This show excellently shows that.

Fred Tupper's "satirical" radio show is the icing on the cake of the show. His undeniable connection to Fatima, the easily offended Muslim restaurant owner in town, wraps it all up nicely.

I don't believe this show wanted to pander to everyone, and in doing so, became bland and banal.

I do believe this show wonderfully represents small towns and people who have to grow their mindsets when they adamantly refuse to do so.

The right people are annoying on this show...
14 June 2023
Usually its the "comedian" host that makes me want to scream at the screen. Here it's the type A contestants. I will say its fun to watch moms and daughters try not to fight on screen, but some contestants are so uptight that you actively hope they get cut.

Joel McHale is fun to watch. He has to wait to taste the dessert until after the judges do, and sometimes he's literally dancing behind the judges holding a spoon.

It is also fun to watch cooks and chefs who could really use the $100K, and I find myself getting invested in some of the less-annoying contestants. Of course, they usually get cut, but then I find new contestants to like.

I need a Season 2!
9 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Where else would I find Ed Helms manically searching for his family history? Dustin Milligan dating a chubby girl? Native Americans portrayed as average citizens, and not tokens?

I know it isn't as funny as everyone hopes an Ed Helms steered vehicle would be.

As a drama it stands on its own. As a look into current Native American affairs in the U. S. it stands on its own, and is rare in that respect.

Shows like this deserve a second season. Will Nathan find his new family? Will he save the house where he grew up?

Actually Funny

The Thanksgiving episode of this sitcom is honestly the last time I laughed out loud. I know others panned it, but I found it relatable and some of the episodes super funny.

As moot as this review may seem since the show has been off the air for two years, but I still watch the Thanksgiving episode every year.

Rom Coms aren't dead!

I have adult ADD and usually get bored during movies pretty quickly. Not this one. Geraldine Viswanathan was funny and sympathetic, and Utkarsh was pure gold as usual. However, the banter and dialog were very smart and witty. Phillippa Soo was awesome, and one of the most beautiful women I've seen in Hollywood in a long time. More than that, though, Hollywood is finally giving a voice to deeply insecure women who don't sell themselves short and still get rewarded.

Love it for what it is
29 December 2019
It's a wonderful look at Corfu in the 1930s, and it's a fantastic vessel to view Josh O'Connor, Alexis Georgoulis, Milo Parker, etc. being excellent. As a not-well-versed American, this is my first introduction to these actors, and I'm looking at everything they've all been doing now. This show also makes me love Greece even more. Finally, whether or not this show follows Gerald Durrell's trilogy exactly is besides the point, because it still shows his genius as someone who overcame a semi-neglectful mother and poverty to help change conservation for the better!

Such a wonderful spinoff!

Warning: Spoilers
Geraldine Hakewill and Joel Jackson are perfect 1960s iterations of Essie Davis and Nathan Page. While Peregrine doesn't emit the same un-shatterable self-confidence as Phryne, Detective Steed builds the same smoldering sexiness as Detective Robinson. I really, really hope for more episodes, as I want to see more 1960s versions of crimes and fashion in Melbourne. I'm also desperately hoping for a reappearance of Phryne and Det. Robinson....hopefully with the two still together.
